I've been doing a strange kind of pre-bedtime wandering tonight, and just found your post. I'd like there to be more Rathe/Eslingen fic, and Mathey/Lynes fic too, but it's also quite nice reading what other people think of them.

I don't think Rathe/Eslingen are Bodie/Doyle by any means, but I definitely think they were inspired by Bodie/Doyle. There are many more similarities than just their hair/height, right down to a couple of quotes from the actual eps. I wrote a post listing various connections years ago, though I think I've found other bits and bobs since then, and not written them down. I could find that original post for you perhaps, if you were interested. I've also had as-near-as-I'd-expect confirmation of the connection from MS, in reply to a comment I made once. So I'm convinced. *g*

Sorry to hear you probably won't write any more Points yourself - I've recently re-read your Points fics, and wished for more. I'd quite like to write some myself, and I might one day, and it probably won't be how-they-got-together, because I'd have to squeeze it in very closely to MS' books... although as you say, she's left lots of space for us, so maybe... I'm also very fond of Mathey/Lynes and wanting more of them, and every now and then wonder about giving it a go, but... well, we'll see.

There's so much I love about these worlds of Scott's - the worlds themselves, so beautifully drawn and in such working-detail (by which I mean so that you can see it and feel it, not so that you're bored with reams of explanation), the characters (and I like the sparseness of Rathe/Eslingen as much as I like the emotional baggage of Mathey/Lynes), and in the Points books I very much like the way that you can just relax into a world which has men and women both in it, but not get caught up in any of the stupid gender-relationships that we trip over in our own world. They just get on with being people, which is interesting enough in itself...

ETA - actually I'm curious about your description of people saying Rathe/Eslingen are avatars/an AU of Bodie/Doyle, come to think of it I've never heard anyone conflating them that way at all, just that there is an inspiration-type connection. Mind you, my circle is limited... *g* Was this quite some time ago though, maybe around original publication, or more recently, or...?
