Also, since the new Pope is a Jesuit I would assume that his name references Francis Xavier rather than the fluffy animals saint.

Apparently an Official Vatican Spokesman has said that it refers to St. Francis of Assisi, though I would imagine it refers to St. Francis Xavier as well.

Normally I have a lot of admiration for the Jesuits--I'm not Catholic, but they seem like both the most intellectually rigorous and the most ethically sound (as in, more interested in social justice than in people's sex lives) part of the Catholic Church. The new pope, alas, does not seem to part of this fine Jesuit tradition.
