the "You save me and I save you" line was absolutely beautiful
That was one of my favorite lines.
The scene where Tintin thinks about masturbation works really well in bridging the gap between his youthful innocence and the insight he gains
Ah, thank you. One of the hardest things about writing this story was trying to figure out how Tintin's sexuality might work and might be convincingly portrayed. Trying to move him the distance from an basically asexual state, where he has a sexual drive but has never connected it to anything he feels for another person, into desiring a sexual relationship was tricky, especially since I didn't want to suggest that he was actually asexual and get into a creepy "asexual is CURED BY LOVE" trope. I tried to suggest a multitude of things going on: a repressive background, the influence of heteronormativity in making him think that if he's not attracted to women he's not attracted to anyone, a lack of previous emotional connections, and perhaps something like demi-sexuality where he doesn't feel attraction until he's in love. Placing the not!masturbation scene after the scene where he's so physically aware of Haddock was deliberate; what he felt for Haddock in the previous scene was desire as well as love, but he hasn't quite parsed it yet.
The odd thing is, writing about Tintin wanting a wank felt almost dirtier than writing him having sex with another person.
"Perhaps he's burning too" is another elegant display of dramatic irony, since, well, we can imagine the answer.
Poor Haddock. I really put him through hell in this fic. The idea that Haddock gets drunk on the rocket because he's going crazy being in such constant proximity to Tintin was halotolerant's, which I grabbed and elaborated on.
