I didn't care about _The Affinity Bridge_ either; and I wanted to, because I like steampunk and there were some nifty bits, like Queen Victoria (the creepiest thing in the book, imho), but the characters never seem to rise above their backstory plot coupons.

It's funny, because I'm usually a fairly uncritical reader of fiction unless I'm deliberately setting out to be a critical reader, but that book made me cranky.
