I started watching Colditz because of a post on LJ friendsfriends pointing out that, when you have hundreds of men locked in prison together for years, there's bound to be some sex going on ( Read more... )

Where did you find Colditz? I've been intending to rewatch that for ages. I remember seeing it as a teenager and enjoying it a lot, though I've forgotten the characters now. Nice subtle fic though.

I'm glad you liked the mini-fic, thanks! I'm hoping, now that I've finished the show, that I can lure other people into watching (or re-watching) it. Because it's pretty awesome and deserves a fandom.

I certainly intend to rewatch it. About all I remember of the series is the general setting (I loved POW stories and a scene where a German got drunk and took to the floor with an axe, shouting the names of victories with each blow. I might have that wrong though.

I looked it up because it's based on real-life and I see the characters are fictional amalgams of the real ones which is a sort of relief.

I have the original factual book which I also read as a teenager but I stopped reading this time round when they befriended a cat, fed it till it gained some weight, and killed it to eat. One tiny meal (and a toxic carnivore at that) instead of rewarding companionship? :-( I should persevere though because there are wonderful things like the glider and a professor who held classes in bogus Chinese which he made up and only just stayed ahead of his students. I still remember "soy: to eat" and "soya bean: I eat a bean".

Good heavens, Colditz! I saw it as a young woman in the UK and found it stiff-upper-lippish - but Anthony Valentine as Captain (Colonel? very hazy memories) Mohr was wonderfully villainous.

Love your story, though - you do understated SO well.

Are you in touch with theficklepickle? She used to be a huge Colditz fan and co-wrote an incredibly well-researched novel entitled "The First Duty".

One of the men in my German class is the son of one of the Colditz escapees. He gave a talk about Colditz to the class last semester. Apparently there are a few memoirs written by prisoners.

I suppose it is a bit stiff-upper-lippish--although less so in season 2--but then, I rather like that kind of thing.

That's so cool. His talk must have been fascinating.
