Could people who've read it tell me whether Rohase Piercy's My Dearest Holmes is worth spending money ($15.99) on? Is it significantly better than the Holmes/Watson slash I can read for free ( Read more... )

I haven't read it, but I like to read the reviews on Amazon.com before I buy things.

Thanks. Amazon reviews can be tricky, of course--I've seen books I think are terrible get mostly raves.

And apart from reviews (that can be biased) amazon has http://www.amazon.com/gp/sitbv3/reader?ie=UTF8&p=S00A&asin=1419676326 the first five pages , so at least you can get a taste

Huh. I'm sure they didn't have that feature (for this book) the last time I checked.

Having read it, I'm still not sure. The prose isn't incompetent, but it's not particularly lively either, and it feels like bog-standard Holmes pastiche so far.

Good grief! How much!? Rushes to put one of her two copies onto e-bay...

I've read worse Holmes pastiche, and a lot hotter/better slash, but it's a period curiosity that's worth having on your shelves (provided you can get it at a reasonable price - say $5).

gerald likes it, though I'm not sure whether that's as a 'period curiosity', as inamac says. spacefall would know.

I know it's a while ago and if you were going to get the book you'd have probably done so by now, but I've read it. I can't say I was entirely keen on it. You have Watson acting slightly out of character and doing things Holmes tells him not to. My sympathies were with Holmes throughout the novel, I'm not sure if that was the intent. I don't want to go too much into it in case you haven't read it.

(In case you were wondering why I was trawling through an old entry in the first place, I was looking to see if you had other reviews for Sherlock Holmes patisches.)

Actually I still haven't bought it--a local university library has a copy, so I can always go there if I really want to read it. But I've heard very mixed things about its quality, to the point where I'm not sure I want to bother.

If you don't need to buy it then it probably is worth a look. You won't loose anything by reading the first couple of chapters, then you can get an idea as to whether you'll like it or not. It did get a few five star ratings on amazon so it must appeal to some people more than others. It also might depend on what you're expecting. When I read it, going off the five star ratings I expected something spectacular, so I was disappointed, whereas if you're going in with lower expectations it might seem better than you'd thought it would be. To be honest though, I've read better Holmes/Watson slash on the internet for free.
