I've got a theory

I've been thinking about Time Lord sexuality. As you do.

I am forced to admit, reluctantly, that the Doctor seems rather sexually indifferent. Even in the ostensibly sexed-up new series, the only person he clearly has some kind of erotic/romantic interest in is Reinette. And before the new series, my understanding of telly-canon is that he's ( Read more... )

In regards to how I feel about him canonically, that is basically the conclusion I've come to. That Time Lords CAN have sex and such, but that they've bioengineered themselves not to want or need it anymore. I wrote a fic once where the Doctor is basically explaning this to his amorous companion, and saying "I just don't feel anything like that anymore" and the companion counters with, "You've reneged from the Time Lords, stolen a TARDIS, broken the non-intervention time laws, etc. Why not break the 'no sex' rule too? Live on the wild side!" And eventually the Doctor is like, "WHOOHOO OKAY!" hahahahaha. But he had to conciously sort of give in.

However, I certainly don't always adhere to that in fic. In fic, especially since I'm so fond of porny Two, I often write him more like an older man. That he was sexually prow in his first incarnation, when he was younger (I assume he had sex to produce one of Susan's parent. I hate the Loom theory.) And that on Gallifrey sex was mostly a procreation only thing, so he didn't have it much after that.

but once he starts meeting humans, he starts... acting more like them, becoming more tacticle, etc. By the Second Doctor, I think he's discovering his sexuality all over again, really coming into it from a "it's fun" angle verses a "procreation angle" (Not like he could procreate with Jamie anyway!). But as he goes on, his sexuality ebbs again, like a human does a bit, as they get older. He could still have sex but by the time he's hitting 6, 7, 8, etc., it's much harder to get it up. That's why I see his later loves as more romantical than sexual. (though I certainly don't mind porny Eight or whatever.)

But I do like that theory as well. Fanfic is glorious in that you can have all sorts of different theories for different stories. :D

I like the idea of the Doctor discovering/rediscovering his sexuality once he's around humans. I'm not sure the aging theory works for me, though, since each regeneration allows physical renewal. But I could certainly see his attitudes about sex, and his willingness to engage in sex, changing over the course of his long lifetime.
