treasure!

My local crackhouse opium den seducer of the innocent comic book shop had their anniversary sale today--20% off everything.

So I made some purchases. Here's my loot:

Astonishing X-Men 13, 14, and 15, bought even though the Astonishing TPBs annoyed me a bit. Because I'd seen the scans from #15, and I could not resist "The moose has my scent again! O!" (If you have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, the scans are here.)

New X-Men vol. 3, "New Worlds," vol. 4, "Riot at Xavier's," and vol. 5, "Assault on Weapon Plus." That's a lot of Grant Morrison. It's possible that my brain will explode.

Ultimate X-Men (hardcover) vol. 3, which contains "Ultimate War" and "Return of the King." I only bought the hardcover because they didn't have the paperbacks, and I was in a state of mad craving. Reason, temperance, self-control? Useless against the power of Magneto's striking Eastern European profile!

Madrox (miniseries TPB). The clerk talked me into it after I asked about storylines that followed up on House of M. He swore it was a good story. I was actually only interested in storylines that followed up on the main X-Men characters and of course Magneto, but the clerk was powerfully persuasive. In the sense that he was super hot. (To be fair, I don't think he was just trying to make a sale--he also advised me not to bother with the current main X-Men titles, but to wait until they get new writers, which both are doing in the next few months. Apparently Mike Carey's going to be writing one of them. That should be interesting.)

Even at 20% off, this little spree was not cheap. But on the bright side, the store had a deal where if you spent over a certain amount, you got to pick a free hardcover (from a selection). So I now also have Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics.

Reviews, squeeage, etc. to follow, of course.

And finally, I just watched the fireworks from my balcony (there's a building in the way, but I could see a reasonable amount). There are (a lot of) times when living in Washington DC sucks, but occasionally it's pretty damn cool.
