Elephant Man Essay
In, The Elephant Man, there are different examples of human nature throughout the novel many people use there instinct at first glance at John Merrick. Human nature serves as one reason why people reacted the way they did towards him. Throughout the novel John Merrick and other characters show us that there is something deeper within a human being.
John Merrick has deformed features causing many people shy away from him, laugh or even make jokes about him. There are a few examples of human nature in the novel that prove there are more than just your intial thoughts. When Treves explains to his wife about John Merrick she seems scared and unwelcoming. When Anne meets John Merrick she is more open to him and she find herself sympathizing. Both begin to cry, this shows that Anne was able to look past his deformities and accept him.
Another fact that proves there is more to humans than just instinct is that Bytes’ assistant let Merrick get away without waking Bytes up. Bytes assistant also sticks up for Merrick when he won’t eat. This shows empathy towards the elephant man; not only towards his deformities but towards the way he is treated. John Merrick is treated horribly by many different people but he seems to think there is something more to human nature.
Throughout the novel Merrick is always searching for something deeper in the people in his life. Even when people are poking fun at him he is able to remain composed and calm. Merrick never looses his kindness; he is able to see the good in people and realize that there is something more to humans than there nature. He realizes the good in people has to be brought out.
