Lisa Simpson
Period 9
Mrs. Coopersmith
In the novel, The Bread Givers, Sarah is constant in her struggle for rugged individualism. Sarah wants to become an individual and separate herself from what her family does. She begins to realize she is different in her immigrant experience and wants to experiment with American cultures. This theme is the one immigrant experience theme that shows itself more then any other in Sarah’s Character.
In Sarah’s early life she shows the theme rugged, individualism, by going against her father’s view and her family’s culture. The quote,” No-no! I’m no beggar! ….I want to go into business like a person. I must buy what I got to sell”(pg 21), shows how Sarah is struggling to break away from her family and away from her family’s constant requests. Sarah realizes she wants to make herself known for something more then begging. She begins to want to separate herself as an individual.
During Sarah’s night school period she decides she wants to become a teacher. This shows rugged individualism because she is pushing to become something no one in her family was. She was able to believe that she could accomplish something on her own. In the quote, “I want a quick education for a teacher” (pg 162), Sarah expresses her feelings to become a teacher and to be different. Also she surprises the women at the desk because it is not expected for Sarah to try to become a teacher.
As Sarah grew older and graduated from college she showed rugged individualism in different ways, unlike in the past.
