Today is the first day of August - one of the hottest months of the year. To me, though, August is early mornings, watching the world brighten, enjoying the cool before the heat of the day commences. To the rural Irish, it was Lughnasa - celebration of the first fruits of harvest, of celebration with contests of strength and agility, of staying up late dancing around the bonfire. And of drinking poteen. (And now I'm wondering what comic strip of my youth featured a blonde woman named Poteen. I'm thinking perhaps Steve Canyon?)
