Crib notes:

THE SCOTS BONNET (J8x32) 3C (4C set) RSCDS Bk 10
1- 8 == 1s+2s dance R&L
9-16 == 1s lead down the middle & back
17-24 == 1s cast, cross RH, cast down behind 3s & lead up to Balance-in-Line with 2s (Men face down)
25-32 == 1s+2s Balance-in-Line across, 1/2 turn opposite partners LH to put 2s in centre, Balance-in-Line, 2s dance up to 1st place as 1s cross to 2nd places
Personal notes:
1. When the first couple lead back up the dance to stop in the middle at the second place, there is an awkward little moment when the first man "pulls back with his left shoulder". Up until that moment, he is facing forward, moving forward, in the middle on the ladies' side, his right hand in the first lady's right hand. Keeping hold of that hand, he basically spins around 90 degrees to face down the dance. At the same time, he extends his left hand toward the second lady.
2. To counter that potentially awkward move, there is a nice (pleasantly satisfying) movement at the end where the second man releases the first lady to dance around the second lady and first man who are spinning around the axis of their joined left hands to their final position. The positioning across the middle of the dance is 1st lady (facing down) - 2nd man (facing up) - 2nd lady (facing down) - 1st man (facing up). The 2nd couple drop right hands and everyone pretty much dances around the pivot of their joined hands. The 1st lady dances straight across the dance to the 2nd lady's position, the 2nd man dances into the 1st man's position, the 2nd lady spins into the 1st poisition and the 1st man into 2nd. This is the part that reminds me of the whirl of the opening of the shell called the Scots bonnet.

THE WILD GEESE (J8x32) 3C (4C set) RSCDS Bk 24
1- 8 == 1s+3s set advancing & Balance-in-Line, turn partners RH & 1s cast to 3rd place while 3s lead up to 1st place
9-16 == 3s+1s set advancing & Balance-in-Line, turn partners RH & 3s cast to 3rd place while 1s lead up to 1st place
17-24 == 1s lead down & back to 2nd place
25-32 == 2s+1s dance R&L
Personal Notes:
1. This was an interesting one in that the first move was the Balance-in-Line which I associate as a second or even third move for a dance. It was also noteworthy in that the 2nd couple were essentially place-holders for much of the dance.
2. I did NOT like the "lead up & back" of the 3rd part because ... because I had already led down and the ... what? instinct? learned habit? ... is that at the conclusion of a "lead up & down", one casts off. Of course, in this instance, it wasn't a "lead up and down" but it's hard to remember that in the excitement of the dance.

MAGGIE LAUDER (S8x32) 2C (4C set) T Wilson RSCDS Bk 10
1- 8 == 1s+2s set twice & dance RH across 1/2 way
9-16 == 1s+2s set twice & dance LH across back to places
17-24 == 1s lead down the middle, back to top & cast to 2nd place
25-32 == 2s+1s dance R&L
Personal Notes:
A nice simple dance - the hardest part of it was remembering to saunter slowly in the first two moves.

SWASHBUCKLING IAIN (J8x32) 2C (4C set) C Hunt San Francisco Coll 2
1- 8 == 1M dances reel of 3 on opposite side with 1L+2L (RSh to 2L)
9-16 == 1M followed by partner dances Tandem reel of 3 across with 2s (RSh to 2M)
17-24 == 1M followed by partner dances down the middle & leads her up to top
25-32 == 1s+2s dance Allemande
Personal Notes:
I've never seen a dance before with a reel like the one in the first move. And that Tandem reel of 3! I can understand the name because it felt like the 1st lady was trying her darndest to keep tabs on that peripatetic 1st man! I have danced other dances wherein the first couple dance a reel of three with another couple across the dance BUT ... in those, the first couple were arm in arm side by side, not the woman "tucked up close" behind the first man. That was just plain bizarre!

WITHIN A MILE O' EDINBURGH TOON (S8x32) 3C (4C set) Skillern RSCDS Bk 21
1- 8 == 1s cast 1 place, turn 2H, cast down 1 place own sides & turn 2H
9-16 == 1s lead up to top, cross RH & cast down 1 place, 2s+1s dance R&L (1 step to each hand) 1s end facing 1st corners
17-24 == 1s set & turn 1st corners, set & turn 2nd corners (1s end in 2nd place opposite sides)
25-32 == 2s+1s+3s Adv+Ret & turn 2H all ending on own sides
Personal Notes:
I had to leave before this one was even explained so I'd love to have some notes from you who did dance it. That rights and lefts in the second move looks tricky and fast - esp. ending with the first couple facing corners. How did it feel dancing it?
