Gaelic verse - "Almost"

Oct 27, 2009 08:48

While researching today's proverb, I came across this verse and was enchanted by it.

Chaidh “theab” le creig 's theab nach deachaidh
's bhàthadh “shaoil leam” ged nach do shaoil cuid e
ach nam biodh “b' fhearr leam” beò cha bhiodh ceann air colainn

“Almost” fell over a rock but it almost didn't,
“I thought” was drowned though some thought not
but if “I had rather” were still alive, no one else could then survive.

This reminds me of the English verse "Don't care didn't care, don't care was hung. Don't care was put in a pot and boiled 'til he was done."

I think there's another English verse that is even closer in the meaning, but I cannot call it to mind at the moment.

proverb, gaidhlig, nursery rhymes, gaelic, seanfhacal
