One of the things in Simon's orientation packet was the Familiar quiz. It isn't binding, simply gives the new student an idea of what kind of familiar they might end up with. I heard of one student who ended up with a pig -- just because he made one minor mistake during the ceremony.

Find Your Familiar
What familiar will choose you? Take this quiz before the Festival of Choosing to help you anticipate which animal will be your lifelong magical companion.

1. You have a quiz in information magic today, but you forgot to study. You :--
a. know the answers anyway -- school is easy!
b. answer the questions as well as you can.
c. copy a friend's quiz.
d. decide you don't like information magic anyway.
e. ask the teacher if you can take the test another time.

2. You find a bag of magic pebbles that turn into candies when you put them in your mouth. You :--
a. turn the bag in to lost and found.
b. bring it back to your room and share the pebbles with your friends.
c. try to make candy that turns into pebbles when you put it in your mouth.
d. decide to keep it -- it's good candy!
e. didn't "find" the bag so much as convince someone to give it to you.

3. You accidentally bump into another student on the way to class and books are spilled everywhere! You :--
a. recognise your favorite book and tell the student how much you liked it.
b. stop and help the student pick up the books.
c. would never be so clumsy.
d. catch all the books before they hit the ground.

The first magic a new student at Aldwyns will perform is Summoning a Familiar; it's the reason they are required to arrive a week before the other students. There are other students participating as well, those who have not yet acquired a familiar, for one reason or another.

The Festival of Choosing is a week-long event. First, the new students are tutored in the mechanics of the spell, then they are guided in the acquisition of the materials required. The more of the ingredients the caster collects himself, the more effective the final results. Finally, they draw a summoning circle around themselves and wait for their familiar to appear. Once the spell is cast, the wizard cannot eat or drink, speak or move until the familiar arrives and accepts the offerings provided*. This can take minutes (rare), hours or even days. In the latter case, Master Summonings will step in and break the circle himself, releasing the student to try again in a year.

Not having a familiar is not necessarily a sign that the wizard's power is lacking: it might be that the familiar is too young, or not even born. It is the familiar which chooses the wizard, afterall, not the wizard who choses the familiar.

* (That was the mistake the wizard with the pig familiar made. He got hungry and ate the food intended for his familiar!) *
