Nanowrimo 2016 update
I made 50000 words yesterday. A little over, actually. 50821 words. That completes the National November Writing Month challenge but ... not my personal challenge.
I want to finish Part 2 by tomorrow, preferable also have it typed in, but I won't quibble too much if I don't ... I want to be able to start December with Part 3. So, yesterday I finished the scene - all set up for the big finish that will allow me to jump ahead 2 years to Part 3 when .... when one of Jace's little sisters rang him up on the phone to inform him that she was standing on his doorstep outside. Not even his favourite sister. Susie ... Sue is the middle child and the one Jace considers the odd-ball out of his sisters. Fact is, she's the one most like him and she WANTS to be like him.
I didn't want her there. She complicates the minor harmonic labyrinth - the little finish that will let me conclude Part 2. I didn't see that she had any reason to be there. But ... in my mind, my subconscious insisted that she was there and if I didn't write it down, it would hold the rest of the story hostage until I did. So this morning, bleary-eyed and reluctant, I wrote. And I found out why she was there.
Actions have consequences. Not just immediately. Consequences ripple out, actions and reactions affect others. I found that Part 2 was not just about introducing Sarah, but also about reintroducing Jace after four years of suspicion and harassment. Learning why he is the way I saw him in the later stories, from whence his anger issues spring.
Susie reminded me today that ... Jace isn't the only one affected by the public perception of his guilt. His family ... his mother and father are trying to protect the girls from it all - by asking Jace to stay away. His parents aren't entirely sure that ... well, they think there may have been an accident and that Jace might be responsible for Buck's death.
But as I learned in Part 1, his sisters have minds of their own. They all adore and trust their big brother and THEY have no doubts about him whatsoever. So his absence in their lives makes a difference. They feel that he has abandoned them.
Susie is the one most like Jace. If she feels something has to be done and nobody is making a move to get it done, then by God or by something else, she'll be the one to do it.
The story needed this because things are changing for Jace, and I needed to show that he can be open to change as well.
