Hi all,
I know I don't post a lot here because I tend to be busy other places on the web, but I just wanted to share my impressions of Redline.
I had initially thought this was going on a broader release in Europe just now because it is rarer than rare for Scotland to get its hands on something first. The movie has appeared at various film festivals in Europe, but has only just had its Japan première a few days ago. For some reason, coinciding with its Japan release, there have been showings in California, and also here in sunny Scotland?!?!??!?!?!?! I think it is because the film is appearing as part of the 'Scotland Loves Anime' programme.
Just to give you a bit of perspective, I went to watch this as a fan of Kimura Takuya. I am not a huge anime fan. In fact, the last time I really watched any anime was when I was a kid and we used to get a lot of older Japanese series on our local channels in the US (yeah, back before there was cable or satellite television - I am THAT old)
I am staying away from a review of plot - that is already available elsewhere on the web, like at anime news network and I think imdb. I don't want to spoil the plot.
I found the film entertaining, funny in bits, and in some parts ludicrous (but ludicrous in a good way that fits the film)
It really sounded like Kimura Takuya had a lot of fun doing it. Those of you that are fans of his acting will be familiar with how he can convey so much with a look, or in the case of the drama 'Change', with even just a shot of him from the back. Here, all his acting skill was just in his voice, and as with everything, he gave it his all. I could also hear a lot of his persona in the voiceover that he did but he still made it emotive without it being 'overdone' in the way you sometimes get in anime voiceovers.
Visually, the film was amazing, particularly when I go back to the fact that it was not done with any CGI but was old school hand drawn anime. I think in the cinema, the lovely GFT, I was the only SMAP fan in a sea of West of Scotland anime fans. They certainly appreciated the film. There was whooping and applause from the audience at the end of the film.
I recommend it!
Unfortunately, Kimura-san was NOT present at the Scottish première of Redline...... :)
By the way, if you are in the UK and still interested in seeing it, it will be playing at the Edinburgh Filmhouse on the 15th of October.
