Summary: Eunhyuk is an exhausted college student working part time in a mall shoe store. Donghae works in the newly opened candy store right across the way.
Eunhyuk was already running late for his morning class, but as he tugged his sneakers on he couldn't find it in himself to bother hurrying. It was just a review over what they'd covered that week, and though Eunhyuk was struggling to keep up in the class already he didn't think one day would hurt. If it did, well he didn't care about that, either. He would've been tempted to just go back to sleep, but his mother would've nagged him until he gave in and got up anyways. He didn't enjoy his classes at all, they were horribly boring lectures but he supposed that's what he got for choosing to major in business. He should've majored in chemistry; at least he would've gotten to blow things up then, though he was pretty sure he would've failed out of that early on. Even now he was struggling to keep his C average. It wasn't that the classes were overly difficult, but with everything that was going on it was getting increasingly difficult to keep up, and he didn't like business to begin with. He'd wanted to study dance, but his parents had been against it, at least in the beginning. After much arguing they'd finally come to a compromise, get a degree in something reasonably professional first, then he could pursue dancing so long as he had something to fall back on later. If Eunhyuk had known then what he knew now, if he had known he was going to have to work so hard to pay part of his tuition himself, he would've said 'screw it' and went with dance from the get go, but that wasn't how it started.
His parents had worked hard all their lives to save money for Eunhyuk and his younger sister to attend a decent college, and in the beginning they had been the ones paying for Eunhyuk's schooling, but that was before the economy took a nosedive. They'd had a decent amount of money saved, but Eunhyuk's father was laid off and his mother's hours were cut. They'd tried to get by as best they could, but they eventually had to start dipping into Eunhyuk's college fund just to get by. At first it was just a little, but nearly a year passed before his father was able to find a job. It was only part-time, but at least it was a job. By that point though the college fund was nearly depleted. Eunhyuk had already gotten himself a weekend job, just for a little spending money, but when the management at the shoe store in the mall where he worked offered him additional hours through the week, he'd had no choice but to take it, his family needed all the money they could get to afford to keep living and pay for Eunhyuk's college. Eunhyuk tried not to complain about how long his day was, about how utterly exhausted he was, because he knew his parents nerves were probably more frazzled than his own. Everything left him with barely enough time to breathe, let alone practice his dancing, and what was leaving him quite irritable. He still went to his classes though he wound up sleeping through the better portion of them, and tried to catch up on his homework during slow periods at the shoe store but that usually wasn't enough and he wound up staying up until the wee hours of the morning trying to finish the homework he could really care less about, leaving him with usually only three or four hours of sleep. There'd been many times he'd been tempted to just drop college all together, but he never did. Even though he hated studying business, even if he could wind up getting a job as a simple mail clerk or copy boy, he'd be earning twice as much as he was in the shoe store, and he wouldn't have to deal with people's stinky feet all day. He could work his eight hours and be done with it, and that would leave him more than enough time to dance. That alone was his only source of motivation. Each day of school completed was one day closer to his degree (providing he could pass), one day closer to a better job, one day closer less stress.
He groaned as he pushed himself up from his bed after he finished tying the laces of his shoes, grabbed the strap of his backpack which he swore got heavier with each passing day, and headed out of his room, his free hand coming up to try and wipe the sleep from his eyes. He stopped for a brief moment to down a glass of cold orange juice, ignoring his sisters protests that she'd poured it specifically for herself, in her favorite cup no less. He was just about out the door when his mother caught sight of him, flailing her arms slightly as she rushed towards him.
"Oh! Eunhyuk!! You've remembered your sister's birthday is in two days, right? I've ordered some chocolate candies with 'Happy Birthday EunJi printed on them from that new candy store in the mall, the one that's just across from where you work? Do you think you could pick them up for me when you work? I have to work late tonight in order to leave early for EunJi's birthday." Eunhyuk groaned, but knew there was no way he could say no. What excuse could he possibly give his mother for not wanting to walk across the wide walkway to the store that set directly across from the one he worked in? He hadn't wanted to set foot in it from the first day it opened, no matter how many people bragged about how amazing it was. The sugary sweet smell constantly wafting out from the door which was forever left propped open was enough to make him queasy, and the bright splashes of color only made it worse. To him it looked like someone had chewed up a bag of skittles and then spit out splotches of rainbow color. He forced a smile though, giving his mother a quick nod before he slipped out the door. Perhaps while he was working a shelf of shoes would fall on him, give him a concussion, and he could say he forgot he was supposed to pick the candy up.

While the school day passed by quickly enough (after missing one class entirely and sleeping through one and half of another), his evening at work was dragging on. He swore of one more overly plump woman with legs that looked like roast hams came in and tried to insist they could fit their foot into a size five shoe when they clearly needed a size seven (at least) he was going to scream and start beating them with the shoes they were delusional enough to think they could wear. He didn't understand what was so important about having shoes in a smaller size, especially when they carried the same shoe in the right size which inevitably looked much better. That was one of the many reasons he knew he'd never understand women.
It was nearing twenty minutes until closing when he remembered he still had to pick up whatever candy it was his mother had ordered from the candy store. He cursed under his breath, straightening up from where he'd been sitting on a stool slumped at the counter working on his homework. He craned his neck, looking over one of their displays, through the glass window, and over at the candy store, hoping to find it had closed early, but it hadn't. He cursed once more and closed his book, pushing it off to the side. He made sure to lock the cash drawer, putting his little sign up that said he had stepped away, checked one more time to make sure there were no customers lingering in the store, and then headed out to cross over to the candy store.
"Candylicious, my ass..." he mumbled under his breath as he stuffed his hands into his pockets. He didn't know why the bright colors bothered him so... perhaps because it looked so perky and happy, and with all that was going on he just didn't have the ability to feel perky or happy. He wasn't even quite sure he remembered what happy felt like. "What a stupid name for a store." The smell of sugar and chocolate hit his nose before he even stepped through the doorway, making his face wrinkle up momentarily. He didn't see how anyone could work all day in here and not get sick. At least it was clean and tidy, with all the candies organized by type and even by color, creating various rainbows of color along the wall. He paused for a moment to glance over to one wall in particular, tubes stretching for at least twenty feet four rows high with nearly every flavor of jelly bean imaginable. EEunhyuk just shook his head, wondering who on earth would want that many jelly beans in that many flavors. There were lollipops of different shapes and sizes, gummy bears and other assorted gummy critters, candy necklaces and anything else candy flavored and brightly colored, and rows upon rows of chocolates. Nut filled chocolates, fruit filled chocolates, cream filled chocolates. Clusters, bars, cups, and everything in between. Eunhyuk swore he could feel the bile in his stomach rising, but he was distracted from the nausea when he heard someone speak.
"Can I help you with something?"
He looked over to see a boy just about his age leaning with both arms resting on the counter, brown hair hanging into his face slightly and a wide smile upon his lips. The smile was so big it made him look a little nutty, but Eunhyuk supposed if he was surrounded by that much sugar all day he would be a bit nutty too.
"Yeah.... I guess my mom ordered something from you and she wanted me to pick it up."
"Name?"
"Lee."
The boy at the counter blinked and waited, but when the other only stared at him he couldn't help but to snort with laughter. "... there's only like twenty billion Lee's in Korea..."
"I didn't know all twenty billion of them ordered from you." Eunhyuk frowned, not liking the smartass response he was getting from the clerk, even though deep down he knew the guy had a point. "Lee Yuna."
"Ahhh yeah, the birthday candies. I'll be right back." The man, Donghae as his nametag said, smiled, patting the countertop lightly before he turned to head into the back to get the candies from the storage. Eunhyuk hoped it wouldn't take long, he had a feeling if he waited too much longer he'd have to see a dentist to have cavities filled just from the smell alone. It wasn't that he didn't like sweets, but this was just overkill. He might have a candy bar every now and again, but the generic chocolate purchased at the convenience store was just fine for him, he didn't see why they needed a whole store devoted to sugar. His thoughts were just about to wander off on a tangent when the clerk reappeared with a plastic bag filled to the brim with chocolates candy coated with a pink shell, happy birthday wishes printed on top of that.
"Can I get anything else for you? Or would you like to try some of our chocolate covered cherries we have to sample today?" The clerk smiled nearly ear to ear again, tapping the glass of a round display stand, chocolate covered cherries stacked neatly inside their own little paper cups. Eunhyuk frowned, shaking his head.
"Cherries are fine on their own. You don't need to dip them in chocolate to make them edible."
"Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, didn't they?" Donghae slipped the candies into a box though, folding it neatly and tying it with ribbon before slipping the box into a bag. Eunhyuk glared at Donghae but said nothing more; choosing instead to turn his head away to glance out the door and back at the shoe shop to make sure no one had come in while he was away.
"There you go. Mrs. Lee paid when she ordered, so you're all set." The boy was still smiling, despite the chilly glare Eunhyuk had given him just moments before. Eunhyuk didn't even attempt to smile when he took the bag either, choosing to ignore the 'have a nice day!' as he slipped back out of the store and back to the shoe store to begin closing everything down.

Eunhyuk was beyond exhausted when he got home that night, and was quite glad it was Friday. He still had plenty of homework to do, but at least he'd be able to sleep tonight and work on the homework over the weekend. He still had to work both Saturday evening and Sunday morning, but that still left him enough time to relax a little. He was tempted to leave the bag as it was on the kitchen table, but he was afraid it would get confused for some other grocery bag, and the last thing he needed was his mother yelling at him for not getting the candies because they went missing for some reason. He figured it best to take the box out of the bag then and set it right where his mother sat at the kitchen table, that way she'd be sure to notice it. He reached in with his right hand to grab the box, but his brows furrowed in confusion when he heard the crinkle of paper instead, and felt the texture of paper against his fingers, not the smooth surface of the box the candies had been put in. He let his fingers curl around the paper to pull it from the plastic bag, tilting his head slightly when he saw the smaller paper bag he held in his hands. It wasn't very big at all; perhaps big enough for a cookie or two, and Eunhyuk couldn't help but to panic for a brief moment. Had he accidentally knocked something off the counter into his bag? While he didn't exactly like the store, he didn't hate it enough to steal from it either. He felt awful, surely if he told the guy about it tomorrow he'd understand it was an honest mistake, but then he noticed a bit of writing on the bag. He moved his hand to hold just the corner of the bag to reveal what had apparently been a hastily scrawled 'SMILE :D' in what he could only guess was Donghae's handwriting. He peeked inside the bag then to see four of the chocolate covered cherries. He couldn't help but to wonder when he'd snuck them in, or even why since Eunhyuk had thought he'd made it quite clear he didn't want them. He also couldn't help the way the corners of his mouth spasmed as they tried to turn upwards. He rolled his eyes, even as a snort of laughter escaped him. He wasn't quite sure why he found it so funny either, though he was sure thinking of Donghae as some sort of chocolate ninja had something to do with it. He was tempted to just leave the chocolates with the box for his mother, but if she liked them that would just give her another reason to keep sending him back to the store, and that was the excuse he gave himself as he brought the bag of chocolate covered cherries to his room with him after setting the box of candies out on the table for his mother to find whenever she got home.
He'd left the chocolate covered cherries on his night stand as he changed from his work clothes into his pajamas and flopped on his bed before grabbing the remote to his television. He flipped it on and began to surf through the channels in hopes of finding something decent on late night television to watch. He'd settled on an action movie that had already started, and got no more than half an hour into it before he began to contemplate going to the kitchen to get a snack. It was then that the bag on his night stand caught his eye again. He didn't much feel like chocolate this late at night, overly sugary things always made his stomach churn, but he figured he might as well at least try one rather than just let them sit and rot. He slipped his fingers into the bag to pluck one of the chocolates out, fingers working to carefully peel the paper away from it. He brought it to his nose then, sniffing of it to confirm that it did indeed smell like chocolate. After another moments hesitation he popped it into his mouth and bit down, fully expecting his mouth to be invaded with a sickeningly sweet syrup, just like all the other chocolate covered cherries he'd ever tried. They were all the same, those artificially sweetened cherries surrounded by a layer of sugary syrup encased in a shell of extra sugary chocolate. The explosion of sugar in his mouth never came though, causing his brows to knit in confusion as he continued to chew. Much to his surprise he discovered there was actually a real cherry inside, slightly tart, which contrasted nicely to the sweetness of the chocolate, which much to his delight actually tasted like chocolate, not sugar. Each burst of sour cherry that spread over his tongue was followed by the smooth flavor of the chocolate, and without even realizing it Eunhyuk's hand was reaching back into the bag for another chocolate covered cherry before he'd even swallowed the first one. Before the next commercial came on the bag was empty, leaving Eunhyuk with a slight pout on his lips even though the bag was still staring at him with its happy message written on the front.
So maybe the candy store wasn't quite so bad after all. He doubted he'd be going for all the jelly beans or lollipops any time soon, but if the rest of their chocolates were anything like that, it just might be worth looking in to. He sighed softly, shaking the bag just to make absolutely sure there wasn't anything left in it before he set it back down on the night stand, forcing himself to turn his attention back to the TV as his hand flopped down on his chest. Now that his chocolate was gone, the movie just didn't seem that appealing anymore.
