What gets me the most about Dean is that he is not oblivious to John's manipulations or his own neediness when it comes to his father--but knowing does not necessarily mean dealing. He can't help but fall back into patterns that are nearly as old as he is. I remember the comfortable conceit I had when I was very young that understanding equaled fixing--once you understood the emotional trauma or the complex of experience that caused you to be a certain way, Bingo, it was all better. Yeah, you wish. In some ways, you'd almost be better off not knowing because it would enable you to see yourself in a better light than knowing and not being able to change.
I'm at home sick today, which explains if not excuses the wordiness. I hope this is more coherent than it feels like it is! Anyway, loving it all over again. \O/
