My work requires me to travel every now and then. I frequently travel to Raleigh, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Chicago and the San Francisco Bay area. Each area has a distinct dialect of the spoken english language. Now, I grew up in So Cal and I talked like everyone else and I also picked up the slang of the people around me. When I visit these places I'm usually there for about three days.
Here's what's going on. In these three days or so, I talk to many native people, I hear their dialect, and after a while I pick up the accent in my speech without realizing it. I'll come back home or to work with a Southern accent or a Wisconsin accent, don't-chew-know. I won't tell what kind of dilect I come back with from San Fran. People from work will comment on it and I'll force myself to talk normal again. I usually snap out of it quickly and it never lasts longer than a day. Why is this? This doesn't seem to happen to anyone else I work with, except the flowery language picked up at construction site visits. I've always noticed the different sounds fairly easily and have always been a sucker for women with sultry voices and soft southern accents. Do I have a susceptible or weak mind? Am I subconsciously trying to fit in. I doesn't bother me. It's just weird to me and co-workers.
