Nik and I received a gift certificate to the Flatiron Cafe as a wedding present. Not being a restaurant we have ever ate at before, the gift sat around unused for quite a while. Finally last night after almost a year we decided to go. I made reservations for 7pm. I dressed up in a cute little black dress with my new pink sweater and cute pink shoes. Because of our front stairs being out of commission due to restaining and such, we had to exit out our back door. Anybody who has seen it knows it is the staircase of death, old, slanted, about ready to fall down. The worst was all the mud in the backyard thanks to the rain earlier in the day. All I could think about was my cute pink wool shoes becoming black, so Nik being the gentleman that he is offered me a piggyback ride. Disaster averted we headed for dinner. We pulled up and through the window all you could see were rich old people sipping their wine and looking very snooty. We went in and were seated. Our waitress was a little crazy, but funny. She helped me pick out a bottle of sweet white wine. We sat around and got tipsy while we waited for our food. I could tell Nik was slightly uncomfortable the whole time, especially when I told him the bottle of wine was $46. It was such a typical place that my sister would have gone to that it didn't surprise me. She really enjoys expensive restaurants, probably because she has money. The food was very good. The people at the table nearest ours were supposed to be celebrating their anniversary. They didn't finish their food. They barely talked to each other. They took two bites of the complimentary cheesecake they were given. It made me glad I had Nik because if nothing else he can always make me laugh and we can have an outrageous time even if we are surrounded by snooty rich people. The pumpkin cheesecake was to die for, even Nik, Mr. I don't like pumpkin, had some. Total Bill $120 and change. Gift certificate was $100, so we got away fairly unscathed after tip and all. It was an interesting experience. Plus I got another piggyback ride once we got back to the house. My pink shoes made it through the evening and will live to be pink and cute another day.
