teamuniverse ! This is my first official entry for the team … woohoo! In the 2nd story, I used the actresses' (Corp Barnes) real first name since her character was never canonically identified with a first name. (I'm borrowing the idea from Shena who first used it in one of her stories.)
Disclaimer: SG Universe is owned by MGM, not me, darn it. Since they denied us the pleasure of these characters' company, I'm using them entirely without profit for my own playtime. Comments to my LJ if you wish.
[][][] - Adam Brody & Darren Becker (193 words)
“What do you mean we're running low?”
“Just what I said.”
“Didn't you stash more of these things some place secret?”
“Yeah, I did. But they found them.”
“Then you didn't do a very good job hiding them.”
“I think they saw where I put them.”
“You're military. I thought you knew how to sneak.”
“Come on. I'm the cook. And besides, that's the Marines. Air Force don't sneak.”
“Look, Becker. If you don't find some more of that stuff, I'm gonna have a lot of people breathing down my neck.”
“The next batch won't be ready for another two weeks.”
“Well, I'm gonna need about fifteen before then. Can you get them for me?”
“I don't know. They're pretty nasty tasting when they're not ripe.”
“They're nasty tasting anyway they come. I'll just ferment them longer. Maybe that will help the flavor.”
“All right. I'll have them here for you in the morning.”
“Next time you hide them. Be sneakier.”
“What do you think they use them for anyway?”
“I don't even want to know.”
[][][] - Eli Wallace & Corporal Barnes (291 words)
“Eli, can we talk?”
“Sure. What about?”
“Well ... that Novus thing … you and me … we were together.”
“Oh. Yeah. Um … okay ...”
“Um, we …. This is awkward. But … I was wondering ...”
“Yeah?”
“Well, the Novus database … it ... we kept journals of our life, right?”
“Yeah. Kino recordings and written journals.”
“Right.”
“And?”
“I'm curious. How many kids did we have?”
“Oh! Uh, … well. I don't know. Exactly. Yet.”
“Can you find out for me?”
“Uh … sure. I think. We didn't get the whole database. Only about a third of it.”
“I'd really like to know.”
“Okay. Let me do some checking here ...”
'Thank you, Eli.”
“Can I ask you a personal question?”
“Well, we were married at one point, so , yeah. Ask away.”
“Married … ah-ha, nervous. Um … why do you want to know?”
“It's just that I never thought of myself as a mother. I've been around the military all my life. It's not an easy life, you know. Lots of couples don't make it.”
“Yeah.”
“Well, I'd like to think that on Novus … you know. It was a new life. All the old constraints were gone. I'd like to think I made a good wife. That we were happy. And that I turned out to be a good mother.”
“Leanne, you'd make a great mother.”
“Thanks, Eli.”
“There. I think I found it.”
“What's it say … about us.”
“I'd say we did just fine. Four kids. Three boys and a girl.”
“Wow.”
“Yeah.”
[][][] - Everett Young and Camile Wray (949 words)
“Everett, why don't you talk to her.”
“To who?”
“Don't be obtuse. Talk to TJ.”
“About what.”
“Why are you being difficult?”
“I'm not. We don't have anything to say--”
“What about how you feel?”
“I don't ….”
“I saw your face when you came down to Novus. I saw how you both looked at each other.”
“She's one of my crew. Of course, I was concerned.”
“Oh, don't give me that. I know you better than that.”
“You think so ...”
“Yes, I do. I know you're in love with Tamara.”
“What ...”
“You've probably been in love with her since before starting your affair on Icarus. Only you didn't realize it at the time.”
“You can't know that.”
“Don't lie to yourself, Everett. And you can't lie to me. Not now. Not after we've been though so much.”
“I'm not here for a psych eval, Camile”
“You just thought it was sex didn't you?”
“Camile.”
“She loves you too. She just can't see it right now. She's confused. You're confused. So why not take the first step? Tell her how you feel.”
“I can't do that. Not now.”
“Why not?”
“Because … it's complicated.”
“Love is supposed to be complicated. Otherwise, it's not worth having.”
“Is that a Chinese proverb?”
“Yeah. Mine. TJ is scared right now. This ALS thing has thrown her for a loop. It would anyone. She needs to know you'll support her.”
“She knows that already.”
“You're being dense again.”
“Camile, look. She's been staying away from me for months now. After she lost … “
“Go on. Say it. She was important to you to. You were her father.”
“After TJ lost … Carmen. She tried to tell me about this vision she had. One where Carmen was alive. That she was safe on that planet with Caine and the others. But I was too drunk and sorry for myself at the time to even consider what she said. I turned her away. Harshly. She's not forgiven me for that.”
“Have you asked her? For forgiveness?”
“No.”
“Do you think you should?”
“I don't know. When Caine came back and I went to meet the shuttle, I didn't tell her. Eli blurted it out and she confronted me in the corridor. I didn't want her to get her hopes up all over again.”
“I think she knows that. As a matter of fact, I think she's already forgiven you for that incident.”
“Why do you think that?”
“Like I said. I saw both your faces when you came down to Novus. She was just as relieved to see you as you were to see her.”
“She told me I didn't have to come down.”
“She knew you were in public. Both of you are still trying to fight against your urges and keep to military protocols.”
“She's still under my command.”
“Everett, you found a way around that on Icarus. I'm not saying it was right then. You both have had to deal with that complication. But right now, out here, billions of light years from Earth … if two people ever needed to comfort each other, it's you two.”
“She's got Varro now.”
“No, she doesn't. Yes, she's been reaching out to him for laughter and companionship. But that was only because of your starched back.”
“What does that mean?”
“I have to spell it out for you?”
“No. I know.”
“So do something about it. Look. Earth can't help us. We will probably never be going home. You've thought that for a while.”
“A mind reader now?”
“No, but I'm a pretty good judge of character. I've seen the way you are after talking with Homeworld Command. You can put up a brave front for the crew, but I can read your body language. And the news hasn't been good.”
“Is that something the IOA taught you too?”
“Maybe just tweaked it a little.”
“You're right. The Langarans aren't budging on the supply line. So, no help from Earth.”
“No help from Earth also means no interference. At least, not where relationships are concerned. They're just not practical for our situation. Soon, and I mean within a few years, we'll need to start having babies.”
“It's too dangerous out here.”
“Dangerous, yes. And the longer we're out here, the older we get. In practical terms, Earth no longer exists for us. Destiny is our Novus. The time will come where we'll have no choice. Its have babies or die out as a community.”
“I still have to think about the military discipline issue.”
“No, you don't. Everyone on this ship knows you were the father of TJ's baby. Did discipline fall apart? No. The crew knows we're all in this together.”
“Still ...”
“Everett, the crew is behind you. All the way. There's no resentment about your relationship with TJ.”
“I'm afraid. Of what she'll say. Or not say.”
“Believe me. If you say the right words, show her how you feel, she won't reject you. She already loves you. So that's half your battle right there.”
“You make it sound so easy.”
“No. Not easy. Just let your heart speak for you. You already have hers, you just need to let yours sing to her. The rest will take care of itself.”
