There were many amazing works composed by many composers during the Renaissance era. Among these composers was Orlando Gibbons. He contributed abundantly to the history of music, particularly with his sacred compositions, and is favoured by many well-known performers today, one being Glen Gould. Gibbons has also contributed much to the consort repertoire, specifically, that for viols.
Orlando Gibbons was born in Oxford, England on December 25th, 1583 and died at Canterbury Cathedral on June 2nd 1625. He was the most acclaimed English composer of his generation (footnote 1). He was an organist, a keyboardist and a composer. He had a position as an organist at the Royal Chapel, then was the keyboardist in Prince Charles' privy chamber and finally, organist at the Westminster Abbey.
