Guys, I really enjoy cooking.
For lunch today I made myself a french omelette, (which is basically the method where you cook it over high heat for about thirty seconds, not the method where it is fluffy) with fresh basil beaten into the eggs, and then a side salad of spinach leaves with a dressing of more fresh basil, olive oil, and parmesan cheese.
I felt really classy. I mean, like a year ago my cooking consisted of pasta, minute rice, and microwave-dinners. And now I'm making omelettes, what the hell? And experimenting with spices, what is this! The other day I stir-fried some chicken with red peppers and mushrooms and onions and added thyme and a bit of rosemary I believe it was and it was SO GOOD.
I cannot wait until the vegetable and fruit vendors start selling in the market... I am going to be going crazy with vegetables. And spring is asparagus season!!! Fresh asparagus is to die for. I also want to buy plants to start growing my own herbs, but I will have to learn how to re-pot plants.
So basically this summer I plan on (besides working full time) cooking, knitting (I just finished a blanket!!), and gardening. WHEN DID I BECOME A HOUSEWIFE?
I just really like the domestic arts. I mean at the same time I want to camp and play pick-up soccer and frisbee and canoe and all, but I mean...
I don't know. I have been watching a lot of Lost lately. And I was thinking "If I got stranded on a desert island and needed to restart a community... what skills could I contribute?" And for a while I couldn't come up with anything. Who cares if you know how to paint when you're main concern is survival. I don't know how to hunt... I guess I have a basic knowledge of fishing but it's not great. I don't know how to build a lean-to or anything about tracking. But I knit, and I want to learn how to spin. If I could spin, I could potentially spin various plant fibers into rope, which is always useful. I could weave the rope I make into mats and tarps and stuff. If I learn to identify edible plants I could cook with them. If there was clay to be dug, I could slake it myself and make bowls and plates.
Anyway, this is what I think about. Andre wants to take me camping this summer though and he will teach me stuff like building a lean-to and all. I think I am just really interested in life at a more basic level... I could very well be one of those people who goes to live on a self-sustainable commune somewhere. The person who builds their own home and has a farm and stuff. I could do that.
