Things I want to learn how to do, research or improve on:
  1. Weaving
  2. Knitting
  3. Candle making
  4. Being able to find and recognize edible plants and how to use them properly
  5. Understanding medicinal herbs and plants (their properties, a little on why they are medicinal, etc)

There is a fine crafts course in Ottawa that I am considering taking that focuses on mentorships in celebrated craftspeople's workshops. I want to do pottery and I want to do metalsmithing. Basically... working in a smithy. So bending and hammering metal and all that. I want to learn how to manipulate metal.

I am also considering taking a class like that if I don't get into university next year.

I've been doing a lot of metal work on my own, and I've just gotten the equipment to do a bit of hot work. O: It's super awesome.

It's actually a neat course, because most of it is the mentorship, but there are a couple of classes too, mostly in the history of craft and in design, and then a business of crafts course. Which is good, because my artistic education lacks a bit in design.

I'm starting to wonder if University is actually the right choice for me, actually. You don't need a degree in art to become an artist. I mean it's a valuable source for learning the creative process and various techniques, but I am starting to think that I can learn that cheaper (and easier) on my own by taking side courses in those techniques I wish to improve on and by taking this crafting course. Besides it's not the piece of paper I'm after but the experience. But who knows! maybe I will change my mind.

What schools are you applying to?
