Project decided - Cam's garb

I slept on it, and had a short chat on an email list that reminded me that indeed, I do have something I need to work on for upcoming events, garb for my kids.

Cam is the main one I need to make something for, as he really wants to attend more events with me, both faire and SCA. While I might make him an archer's outfit (aka Link from Zelda) I am thinking I might make him something more - middle class, in wool and linen, that I can add a silk tabard to that would help him blend in more as a page type.

I've got dark blue wool, enough I think for an unlined doublet and a simple pair of breeches. I am thinking unlined as it gets hot around here, and with one layer he should be able to wear it longer than if it was lined and interlined. I am going to keep it simple in trimmings. I think I will make it longer than needed, and a bit wider, so he can grow into it over the year (as I know he will). I've plenty of linen for his shirt which will be kept simple.

I think he'll end up looking more like a commoner, but I hope with a silk tabard over it, he'll blend into court better. I've got red-purple and cream silk from my Phyllis project to make a two-color tabard, although it may be more appropriate to make a single color one in purple. I'll check around a bit and see. If I get time, I may do some applique embroidery on it, but that can hold off till later. I've also some red velvet if that's a better choice for a tabard. Later Henrician would work with red as would Elizabethan, but I don't know which events I'll be doing outside of Visalia so it is lower priority.

Just looked up an image of Hoefnagal's Fete at Bermondsley image, and realized that the few young boys (far left, 1 w/ dogs, 1 with something in his hands) that appear to be in servant positions are wearing simple dark blue or black doublets with long skirts over paned slops. I see another servant in red and black, with gold something embroidered on his doublet front. The more fashionable men have small skirtings on their doublets and lighter colors. So I think the tabard idea is not needed. I don't think Cam will wear paned slops like that, so simple breeches will remain.

edit: I think they might be long skirted coats, not doublets, as there is one guy in the middle where I can easily see a short skirted golden doublet underneath the long skirted outfit. He's in the middle, below/front of the folks with large round things, possibly dancing with a woman and another couple.

Tomorrow I'll start on the shirt at least. While I want to do something for Relle I think it will take longer. I've also got a few accessory items I need to work on, including updating my large ruff to make it look better, and finishing the supportasse. Relle's next outfit plan will come later, as I can really only focus on one outfit at a time.
