Bum Roll #2

Apr 01, 2009 00:21

After dinner, I went back to my sewing room, to make up bum roll #2.

I hunted up a firm blue cotton fabric, that I had set aside in stash for a pair of pants, but realized that the color is not something I want to wear as pants anymore. So, bum roll #2 it would become. I still have lots extra, so maybe nockaround shorts or something can still be made.

I then added paper to the first pattern, extended the pattern 2" in the backside, blending it to the side, then cut out the pieces I needed. One part was cut on the fold, and the other was cut at the selvedge edge, leaving about a half inch to become a seam.

I then sewed up that seam with a basting stitch, then pressed the seam flat. The outer edges were serged closed so that I could sew, finish and trim in one. I then ripped the center back seam open, turned both ends rightside out, and used my finger and a chopstick to make sure it was all out and smoothed along the seam as best I could.

Then the stuffing began. I used polyfill, since it is what I had on hand. I used up a bag and a little more, stuffing the roll as firmly as I could. Once mostly stuffed, I then whipped the seam mostly closed, leaving a few inches so I could stuff the center part as firmly as I could, then I finished the seam shut. Then it was two 18" twill tapes (cotton, I believe) attached to the ends.

Thanks hsifeng for the idea of using fingerloop braids, but I consider this one a mockup to try out in the field, and I am also a bit short on time. If I decide to make another one, I plan on making it from silk or velvet or something nice, and I will put on a fingerloop braids for ties. I just need to see how well this one works for me in actual use first.

I am wearing it right now, and I am not sure how it will work under the farthingale itself. It is supposed to be worn above the hips, from the one pic in the TT book, but it wants to sit at my actual waist when I am sitting down. I think I will need to spend some time wearing the whole undies before the event to get used to this, before I put the gown on as well. Amusingly, my tummy helps to keep the front padding down, as I can hook it under the tummy... which just sounds and feels wrong. I guess I will see how this works in reality. And I will take photos of this, but not right now as I am in my pjs, and I am not taking photos looking as I do.

I will say, that this style is really something for those with large bottoms, and small upper bodies, which I am not. With the artificial hips from hell (and yes, I do have to move sideways through doors), anything large under the farthingale is just not seen, while everything above it is quite snug and very there, except for the highly padded sleeves and huge ruff, of course. So, it is not about the body you have, but the artificial shape of the whole package. It's very strange to my eyes, and it will take some time to get used to this.
