Chapter One
Ryuu is certain that Philip hasn't slept at all in the three days since the two of them were rushed to the hospital. Thanks to the diligence of himself and Akiko and several nurses, he's knows that Philip has been eating at least a little bit, but the puffy, bloodshot eyes and the alarmingly gray palor of the boy's skin is enough to tell him that Philip hasn't slept.
He understands why the boy won't sleep. Ryuu saw Double, in their Cyclone Joker Extreme form, being thrown by the blast. He saw their transformation come undone. And he saw Shoutarou manage to spin them around in mid-air, just before crashing into the concrete and steel wall of the building, so that Philip was sheilded from the brunt of the impact. Philip was already unconscious by that point and has no memory of Shoutarou's actions. Though no one has told Philip about what happened --and he hasn't asked-- Ryuu assumes that he figured it out on his own.
The hospital room is quiet that evening, with only the sound of Akiko's occasional sniffling and the steady beeping of the heart monitor filling the air. Shoutarou is unmoving in the bed, looking far weaker than Ryuu has ever seen him.
It's been three days since Shoutarou lost consciousness.
Philip sits in a chair next to the bed like a statue, his eyes never leaving his partner's face, his knees held tight against his chest. Ryuu is about to scold Philip for sitting like that when a nurse scurries into the room and does it for him.
“Philip-kun,” she says in an overly perky voice, “your poor ribs will never heal if you continue sitting curled up like that.” She taps on his knee gently and he lowers his feet to the floor, wordlessly obeying the woman. She hands Philip a small plastic cup containing two pills, and a larger plastic cup full of water. He takes the medicine, for the pain, making a face of mild disgust as he swallows each pill.
Philip suffered three cracked ribs in the incident, as well as dozens of cuts and bruises scattered along his body, but the doctors assured them that everything would heal in time. Shoutarou's heroic efforts, while foolish, were effective.
The nurse sets about checking on Shoutarou, looking at the various machines hooked up to him and writing down information on her clipboard. When she's finished, she adjusts the blanket covering Shoutarou and smooths out the collar of his hospital gown. Ryuu suspects, later, that she had accidentally applied too much pressure to Shoutarou's shoulder, which had been dislocated from the impact, but at the moment he can only hold his breath as he watches Shoutarou's fingers twitch and his eyes slowly blink open.
“Shoutarou!” Philip shouts, relief clear in his voice. He's on his feet immediately, hovering over his partner, and he grasps Shoutarou's hand tightly. “Shoutarou...”
The man on the bed looks at Philip and gives a small, nervous smile, which quickly turns into a frown. “Do I...” he struggles to speak. His voice is barely audible, hoarse from disuse. “Do I know you?”
Philip's eyes widen in horror and he releases Shoutarou's hand, stumbling back from the bed.
“Why am I here?” Shoutarou continues, looking around at each of the room's occupants in turn. “Who are you people?”
Out of the corner of his eye, Ryuu can see the tears streaming down Akiko's cheeks and he wants nothing more than to hug her and try to comfort her, but he can't ignore Philip, who is slowly backing away from all of them, his hands trembling.
“What happened?” Shoutarou asks, his voice stronger than before. “Was there a fight?” He pauses and looks down at his hands, as if trying to remember on his own. “Where's Oyassan? Is he okay?!” he finally asks, almost in a panic, and he tries to get up from the bed. The nurse is quick to hold him down and she calls for a doctor.
The doctor runs into the room just as Philip runs out.
Ryuu pushes himself off the wall he had been leaning against and starts after Philip, but Akiko rushes past him and runs out of the room and down the hallway, chasing their young friend. When she catches up with him, she grabs him by the shoulders and pushes him against the wall. “Philip-kun,” she starts, but her tears take over and she's unable to say any more. Akiko wraps her arms around the boy and cries into his shoulder.
Philip is staring blankly at the wall in front of him, tears falling silently down his cheeks.
When Ryuu approaches them, he says nothing, not knowing what to say, and he's grateful for the doctor calling for him a few minutes later. He listens intently to the doctor's explanations and tries to ignore the dread gathering in the pit of his stomach. Before the doctor leaves to continue his work, Ryuu quietly asks he something can be given to Philip to make him sleep, worried that the boy's condition will only worsen otherwise. The doctor agrees and then takes his leave.
Ryuu turns and approaches Akiko and Philip, who are still crying in each other's arms. He clears his throat to get their attention and to gather his courage. Akiko releases Philip, reaching for his hand instead, and turns toward her boyfriend. Philip's heard turns in his direction, but his eyes are still blank and it's obvious his mind isn't fully focused.
“They need to run some tests,” Ryuu starts. “They're taking him for testing right now. They won't know anything concrete until morning, but the doctor thinks it's... he thinks the memory loss isn't permanent.”
Akiko smiles and begins to wipe the dampness from her eyes. “See? We're being silly by crying and worrying like this.”
“There's not really anything else we can do tonight, so I think we should all try to get some sleep,” Ryuu says and Akiko nods in agreement.
She tugs on Philip's hand gently and starts walking back toward the room. Philip is pulled behind her, giving no resistence.
Back in the room, Akiko leads Philip to his bed, a few steps away from the bed Shoutarou had occupied. Philip climbs into the bed and lies down, staring up at the ceiling.
“Philip-kun, he'll be alright,” Akiko says, reassuringly. “So, get some rest, okay?”
Philip nods.
The nurse enters the room, then, and approaches Philip, holding out another small cup with one pill in it and a larger cup with water.
Philip looks at her, confused. “I already took my medicine.”
“This is to help you sleep,” she responded.
“But I don't need...”
“Doctor's orders. I know you want to talk with Hidari-kun, but he won't be back for at least an hour and by then he'll be too exhausted. So, here,” she says, placing the smaller cup in Philip's hand. “Take this, get a good night's sleep, and then you can visit with Hidari-kun in the morning.” After Philip reluctantly takes the medicine, the nurse tucks him into bed, taking a small pink and white striped hankerchief from her packet and drying the remaining tears from his checks, careful to not disturb the bandaged cut by his eye. “Good night, Philip-kun.” She turns to Akiko and Ryuu and adds, “Visiting hours are almost over, but I can probably arrange for you to stay if you'd like.”
Ryuu shakes his head. “No, we all need sleep. I think it'd be best if we go home.”
“We'll be back first thing in the morning, Philip-kun!” Akiko says as she starts gather their coats.
Philip's eyelids are already starting to droop.
Just over an hour later, Shoutarou is wheeled back into the room and two nurses help him into his bed. He looks over at the boy sleeping in the bed beside his and frowns. There's a small feeling of familiarity in the back of his mind, but it's fleeting.
“What's his name?” he asks.
“That's Philip-kun. He was with you when the accident happened.”
“Was he hurt bad?”
“Only a couple cracked ribs,” she answered. “As long as he gets lots of rest, he'll be good as new in no time. Now, you need to rest, too, so lay back and try to get some sleep.” She smiles as she finishes setting up the monitors that will keep them updated on his condition throughout the night. Both nurses then bow to him and exit the room, leaving Shoutarou alone with the boy he is sure he should know, but can't remember.
“Well, good night, Philip-kun,” he says with a sigh. Shoutarou closes his eyes and the exhaustian quickly overtakes him and he's asleep within minutes.
In the other bed, Philip shifts with a quiet groan. “Shoutarou...”
To be continued!
Notes: I've had the idea for this for months, but after this weekend, I really needed something to distract me, so... I started this last night. I'll do my best to not fail at updating this in a timely fashion, but I can make no promises. However, if you enjoy the store so far, let me know. I'll be more eager to continue the fic if I know people actually want to read it. :P
