Excellent article, well-written and nicely thought-provoking. Mike's right, of course. Politicians try to change from the top and invariably make a mess of things (any number of examples here, but Communist Russia will suffice as a glaring example of how not to run a society). Change that rises from the bottom and works up through a society ends up changing the whole system. The early socialism that brought about changes to working practices and protected the lower classes from avaricious (sp?) industry owners is a good example here. Which raises the question: what do we, as individuals, have to do to spark changes that would, for example, make our societies more ecologically and environmentally self-conscious, or change our society's attitudes to other races or religions?
