People suck. The end. Lots of my friends (literally about a dozen) came out before I left Washington to ride horses for the first time, and when they were done, they were all "Wow, that was way harder than I thought it would be! I have a whole new respect for equestrian athletes!” and I kind of wanted to be all “WHY DID YOU THINK IT WOULD BE EASY, YOU ARE CONVINCING A 2,000 POUND HERBIVORE PREY ANIMAL TO RUN AROUND EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT BEING CHASED AND TO NOT BE SCARED OF THINGS WHILE NOT IN A SAFE HERD OF OTHER 2,000 POUND PREY ANIMALS, AND THAT’S WHEN YOU’RE NOT TRYING TO KEEP YOURSELF FROM BOUNCING OFF ITS BACK. GEEZ!”
But instead I just went, “Oh, I’m so glad! Did you at least have fun?”
And they did, they were just really surprised what a good core workout and leg workout it was, and how long it took to do everything well. My GM said our tabletop roleplaying game’s horse logistics were getting a re-write as soon as we were done. UM, YES. YES, THEY NEED ONE.
And my horses were totally awesome little angels. My friends didn’t even have to work hard, really!
So basically I think everyone should have to ride a horse at least once so they get it’s hard, even under optimal circumstances.
