Brenden got injured at football.
It took until the 3rd practice before it happened. Jordan and I walked over to watch practice and it was going well. It was nice to sit and talk with him while watching practice. Until.....
Me: OmG!
Jordan: What?
Me: Look at the size of that wasp!!!
Jordan: Where?
Me: It went into that tree! It's flying back and forth from this tree to that tree!
Jordan: I don't see it.
Me: There it is!!
Jordan: Oh wow. (sarcastic wow, not a real "wow")
Me: Seriously that thing is huge!
Jordan: Oh look, there it is!
Me: No! That's a bird.........the wasp is bigger.
Jordan: Oh wow.... (A real "wow" this time.)
Me: What?
Jordan: You have a gray hair.
Me: What? No I don't. (lie)
Jordan: Yes you do! It's right here... look how long it is... and the whole strand is gray! (insert teen laughter)
Me: (insert no laughter here, just an eye roll and an attempt to ignore him) Okay, let's just watch practice.
Jordan: Oh wow...look...it's still there! The gray hair!
So back to practice........
They were practicing tackling and one of Brenden's friends had the wind knocked out of him when he was tackled. He was a little shaken up and since his mom wasn't there I went over to see how I could help. We got things under control and practice was back on. Jordan was randomly humiliated when I corrected Brenden when he wasn't paying attention to coach or clapped and cheered on the boys during their drills. He mentioned something about being thankful someone wasn't at his practices. Pfttt.....one more gray hair comment and I'll come "cheer" him on at his morning practice at the high school. Besides, other parents were there too! Some of them were on the field helping with drills. Yeah they were dads but cmon! Anyway.... So they were running some drills and I was quite proud of Brenden for keeping an eye on the ball when the boy carrying the football broke through the defense because Brenden never left chase and kept after him until he got him down. This happened a few times in a row until he got hit hard during a run and went down and didn't get back up. He rolled on his side and then onto his knees with this head down and holding his arms close to his side. PANIC!!!! I could feel another gray hair popping up as I ran over there, he was in tears, I had him look up.... ok, no blood... looking him over "what hurts? your head? neck? stomach? chest?" ...... he holds up his hand.... "your arm? your wrist?" .....he looks up at me with tears in his eyes and says... "I jammed my thumb."
As I sighed in relief, I'm sure everyone at PlayStation went into a frenzy and put plan B into motion to redesign their game controllers. After a few thumb exercises and a hug from mom he was back into practice. There. I felt better now. Not a major injury, something simple. So I take my place in the grass next to Jordan again. Yes, the gray hair is still there. Both of them.
