Good news to pass along!

Just got the word via mtgat:

Plan B ('morning-after' pill) to be made available without prescription

It will still be available only in pharmacies, kept behind the counter until specifically asked for, and women will have to provide proof of being 18 years or older before they can purchase it--restrictions that are not in place for buying condoms, of course--but still, this can be a great help in reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in the U.S.!

Once it's actually available without prescription, we'll need to start a huge education campaign to let people know it's out there and available if they need it. And I'd suggest that ladies buy a pack to stick in the medicine cabinet, so it's handy on holidays or Sundays when the pharmacy's apt to be closed.

And I'll even go so far as to suggest that big sisters/older friends should be willing to buy a pack for their kid sisters/friends under 18. Think about it: even a boy 14 years old can walk into a grocery store and buy condoms, and it's considered a sign of manhood for such boys to carry foil-wrapped condoms in their wallets... just in case they 'get lucky'. The same sort of birth control should be available to younger women, just in case they 'get lucky', though I'm more tempted to say "get foolish". Or just plain 'get unlucky', and they encounter a boy who's willing to spike their sodas with GHB or ketamine or one of the other date-rape drugs in order to 'get lucky'. That sort of situation is what Plan B was made for; the 'just in case'.
