Seriously, it's a brilliant show. And though it's in it's third season (started last week so tonight's ep is #2 of season 3), if you read up online you'll be fine and caught up. I swear! You really must give it a go!
Isn't it though? I even started watching it mid first season. But I read up, started watching and then watched the re-runs over the summer until I could finally buy the DVDs. Now I'm a full-fledged House addict. It's a must watch by both my fiance and I every tuesday night. It's become quite the ritual actually. :-)
We've just gotten into Lost this summer. We got season 1 from Netflix and then bought season 2 when it came out last week. As we have no cable in our new place yet, we've been watching an episode or two every day. Hopefully we'll be caught up by the time season 3 starts.
You still have a couple weeks, so you should be fine. :) I missed a number of episodes, but caught the summary ones, so I have at least a general idea of what went on.

For a short time I had access to TV and/or cable. I was
convinced to watch "My Name is Earl" and also "Psych."
I enjoyed both of them and would recommend them.
IIRC, "My Name is Earl" is network television and
Psych is USA.
My $0.02. :)
