*shakes head at world* This is crazy. I want out troops to live, too. The whole thing makes me sick.

Totally OT, but in reference to your MP3s, I have no idea what songs you had but I'm more than willing to share my iTunes with you. I'll burn you some CDs or something if you'd like.

While we have the will and the resources to fight in this context, we are effectively hamstrung because realities on the ground require measures we will always refuse - namely, the widespread use of lethal and brutal force.

This is also a problem. We COULD fight harder, but then what? We'd be called even WORSE than what we are now. *shrugs* I disagree with people who are upset about serving for 15 months over there leaving and speaking their (disgruntled) piece. It gives just as biased a view as any other bit that someone can read elsewhere.

Biased how? I don't see what part of the term "biased" has to do with an account of someone who is on the ground over there.

Because they spent 15 months there and didn't want to.

Because they spent 15 months there and didn't want to.

Assuming that most people with the brains of an ant would NOT want to go fight any kind of war, how do you know these men didn't want to? Because they're not singing the party line? And that makes them "biased" how?

You think this war is such hot shit YOU go over there and fight. You want to, don't you?

Until that happens, it would be prudent for us to increasingly let Iraqis take center stage in all matters, to come up with a nuanced policy in which we assist them from the margins but let them resolve their differences as they see fit. This suggestion is not meant to be defeatist, but rather to highlight our pursuit of incompatible policies to absurd ends without recognizing the incongruities.

I think what these people have to say makes way more sense than all the ideological posturing I'm sick of hearing from politicians (and other big mouths) of all types.

i agree with you that letting the iraqis "taking centre stage" makes sense, both for us and in general - but the question remains: when we pull back what will centre stage look like ( ... )

Don't worry about barging, I made this post public for just that reason. Thank you for contributing to the conversation.

I think your point is very well taken. The morons who started this and have criminally mismanaged it from the beginning have put us all, and most especially the Iraqis, in a situation for which there is no "good" solution, only dreadful and (hopefully) less bad ones. Having dumped the Iraqi people right out of the pan and into the fire, we certainly owe them to think of their interests in however we exit. But it seems that "we" (as in our military presence) is only able to move the danger around, not stop or even lessen it--maybe even make it worse simply by continuing to be there.

I think we need to get out, and the military people who are there and dealing with things on a daily basis are best placed to advise on how. Others are better placed to recommend strategies for diplomacy with other governments in the region. What I'm fed up with is blowhards and tag lines; I want to see reasoning based on actual facts. *dreams on*

I'd like to to see that lying sack of shit Bill Kristol try to tell one of these guys, maybe the one who got shot in the head, how much better Iraq is since the surge. Jim Webb is right. Anyone who goes to Iraq who isn't in the military just gets the dog and pony show. They need to stop going. They aren't getting the truth, just propaganda, and they are taking resources that could be better used elsewhere. People like Melanie Morgan and Bill Kristol show just how little they support the troops when they are faced with a real Iraq vet. Morgan calls them liars to their face. What a bitch, but she is the voice of this administration. Make no mistake about that. These guys are going to pay a price for speaking out, wait and see.

Which makes me madder than I've ever been about anything except somebody spouting neo-con bullshit in my journal. There's a long list of things I have to take; THAT ain't one of 'em.
