FanLib Stirs the Already Murky Waters of Fan Fiction

May 21, 2007 08:41

Do you guys read Fandom Wank? It's syndicated as a feed on LJ called Pastede and is really worth checking out if you're into unrepentant mocking (as I am).

Apparently, wank is afoot in the fanfic community as a result of a newcomer called FanLib and its tactics to entice writers to post fanfic on their venture-funded site. Apparently, fic writers concerned about FanLib's terms of service (which among other things transfers ownership of all fic posted on the site to FanLib) has hurt their feelings. FanLib management is actually commenting on LJ re: how the fic authors are "getting it wrong."

An excellent summary of the situation and issues is posted on icarusancalion's LJ. From a purely pop culture prospective, it's a fascinating read. Fanlib might be the catalyst that finally catapults fanfic from the internet underground into court and decides the legality/copywrite issues once and for all.
