The next few hours after Kim
got off the phone with Luka were a blur. This was a moment she had tried to imagine often but always been a little too afraid to count on happening. But it was, at last it was, and periodically she would stop in her frantic packing to burst into a round of ecstatic tears, praise for God on her lips each time. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And of course into the bag she packed without bothering to fold anything very well was Leo's teddy bear and copy of Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.
It wasn't until she was hurrying to put her bag into the car that she remembered she hadn't called her mother yet; Charlene wanted to come with her, of course, but Kim explained to her what she only now was realising: she wanted to do it alone. And that meant no Trey as well.
She felt guilty whenever she thought of Trey as she drove. Lately she'd noticed herself withdrawing from him though she didn't want to, not after all they'd been through together, not after everything he'd done for her. In the beginning she'd worried that he would one day find everything to be too much and leave her, and yet here she was, reluctant to call him. Lately they hadn't seen as much of each other because she just wanted to be alone, and she knew she was hurting him and it made no sense, but she just couldn't help it. It broke her heart, but she had too much to think about now to concentrate on it. Maybe once she got Leo back and things were more normal, maybe then she and Trey could get back to the way they had been and be a real family.
Flipping open her phone, she dialed his work number. He'd want to come with her too, she knew it. Her eyes filled with tears as his voicemail came on, dimming some of the joy she'd been feeling since Luka's call. "Hi honey, it's me. I wish you were there to answer because I have the best news in the whole world. They found Leo! He's at a hospital in Chicago. He was hit by a car but he's only got some minor wounds and a broken leg but he'll be okay. I'm on my way to the aiport now. My flight is at 12:15 so call me if you get this before then. I'm sorry I can't wait for you but I have to go now. I can't wait for anything. I have to be with him. I love you. Bye."
She hung up and blinked to clear her vision. This was no time for any tears other than ones of happiness. Leo was safe, and in a matter of hours she would be holding him in her arms.
