Family woes

I'm not normally a "woe-is-me" sort of person, but lately my mother's side of the family has given me cause to feel sad and irate. So, for the first time ever I shall use my LJ as intended: to whine about my family.

The first issue, one that nobody had any control over, is the my grandfather's death. He died of complications from pneumonia (and a fistful of other health issues) at the age of 83 on July 13th. He was a twice wounded Korean War veteran and a great man. I'll miss him dearly.

However, one of my aunts and my uncle have been less than helpful during this time, or most of their lives as of late for that matter.

To start with my aunt, she moved from West Paris after her dirtbag husband died last year to help my grandparents out with the house. This seemed a good plan to everybody until she did absolutely nothing to help and made a mess of the house on a daily basis, and does nothing but hang around with her scumbag boyfriend.

My uncle is something of a leech off my grandparents and his sons. He lived in my grandparents' basement for years until moving down to North Carolina after my cousins joined the Marines. He is very entitled and takes a number of medications for ailments he doesn't have. Before my grandfather died, he made the trip up to Madawaska to take back some of his (read: my grandfather's) things, including a rifle my grandfather gave me. Not my favorite relative.

After my grandfather died, my aunt attempted to have my grandfather put back in the freezer after his funeral so that my cousin and uncle could see him. This isn't too bad of an idea except my cousin was delayed indefinitely in Kuwait and my uncle waited until the day before the funeral to make the trip up from North Carolina. Fortunately my grandfather was laid to rest immediately after the service (I was a pallbearer), my cousin understood and there was no reaction from my uncle. During the after-burial lunch, my aunt made the comment of "at least you didn't drop him." She also picked the house clean of every item she wanted after my grandfather died, including things that were supposed to go to my cousins and myself.

Today I got a call from my mom saying that my uncle is very angry that my grandfather gave me the aforementioned gun and wants it "back". This is an old Winchester that my grandfather had for years, and gave to me when he distributed some of his arms collection to his grandsons. So, I decide to take the high road and not bother with the ass and give him the gun, on the condition that I keep my gun case. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, and I'm right pissed.
