yesterday night the plan was to eat dinner, go to the movies, and then go out for drinks. we did that but the last part got a whole lot crazier than expected.
dinner
we ate at lonestar steakhouse. they have really good bread. it reminds me of a sweet sourdough. we sat outside b/c there were about 5 parties in front of us if we waited for a table inside. it's a good thing we ate outside b/c it took us about 30 minutes to get to the movie theater. i had abielene chicken and jim had filet mignon with a side of salmon. the chicken was topped with melted cheese, tomatoes, green onions and 2 slices of bacon. basically if a baked potato emptied it's contents on some chicken that was my meal.i only ate one of my chicken breast. we also had some potato skins. i had a good amount of food because i knew i was going to be drinking.
movie
we went to see inside job. it's about the financial/housing collapse of 2008. it was a good movie and i would recommend people to see it. matt damon was the narrator. that was a very weird choice but not the first time i heard him narrate. the movie is good for people who know nothing about finance b/c they explain everything with graphics, interviews, and news clips. it made me change my point of view of bernake. i thought he was going to change the way the economy is today but he was working or consulting with most of these failed institutions. i'm really shocked that people haven't tried to knock out these business leaders. they made billions of dollars by watching people failed and i haven't heard about one attack on theses people. went off on a tangent but yes, go see the inside job.
drinks
jim and i have been trying to find a drinking hole in the oc so we don't always end up at the purple orchid even when we are 30 miles away. what i'm looking for is a place where i can go to get a drink and i don't have to dress up. i would also like some nice bartenders, no uppity crap. apparently i want a dive bar. what i really want is a orange county purple orchid but i'm having a epic time finding it.
last saturday we went to
lucky johns in stanton. we walk in and there's about 10 people with 8 outside smoking. the music was blaring. it might be the old women inside, but there was no reason for the loudness. we ordered our drinks and looked at "1,000 ways to die" and a mma fight on the tvs above the bar. about 5 mins later a whole bunch of people come in and decided that the best place to be is right next to me. the whole bar was open and they thisclose to me. one guy kept going bumping into me so i turned sideways. this other guy had his drink right in front of me. if i drank beer, i would have taken it b/c there was no reason to put his drink there when the bar was empty to his immediate left. we left after one drink. jim seemed to like it there but i can't figure out why. i'm being a nice gf and we are going to try the place another day. but during the week.
back to this saturday. we went to
turc's in sunset beach. number one thing was that there was no parking lot. the good thing is that it's by the beach's public parking lot. so we parked and went inside. i found the place on yelp, it had good reviews and the pictures from their website and yelp made it look like a tiki bar. well pictures lie. the total square footage seemed about 500. you walk in, there's a bench, no table just a wooden bench. look to your left and there's the fireplace not lit. we go up to the 6 person bar area and sit. the stool is too far from the bar and the stools don't move. the bartender was in the bathroom and the bar cleaner person (i guess that's who she was) informed us that if we wanted liquor we would have to wait for the bartender b/c she, the bar cleaner, could only sell us beer. wtf?! i don't understand, do you not know how to make drinks, are you underage, or are you the cleaner? if you are the cleaner don't sell me anything and remove yourself from behind the bar and stand in the hallway. you are wasting my time. strike one
once again the music was loud. if it was full of 20 -early 30 year olds i understand. but it wasn't, the group there was on the downside of 50. the kicker too was that it was mostly pop songs with a little doo wop mixed in when the patrons would request a song. there was a white board which i thought would have some special drinks written but no. the board stated there were free drinks friday(yesterday) at 2 and someone's birthday was coming up in 2 weeks. strike 2
while waiting for the bartender, one of the regular patrons started talking to us. he was funny. he put a coaster on its side and started rolling it and says what isthis called?. a roller coaster. i thought that was cute. he started to tell us that he's been coming to this bar for 30 +years and he's been in and out that saturday 4 times. he asked us where we were from and proceed to tell us about another bar he's been going for 40 years closer to jim's house. he tells us that we should check that bar out b/c it's open from 6am -2am and there's free breakfast on sundays. ok i'm having two issues right now: 1) a regular is suggesting another bar and 2) a bar is serving breakfast with your alcohol.
when the bartender comes, i order an apple martini and jim gets jack and coke. we usually get these drinks as our litmus test. well for me it is, if you make a decent apple martini, i'll try something else. jim wanted to open a tab with his american express, they only take visa and mastercard. well this can't be our normal hangout if you don't take my bf card. strike three. i want to finish my drink and leave.
when we left turc's i told jim that we could go back home instead of trying to bar hop. i needed to write a yelp review b/c i was that mad at the place. i felt lied to from the yelp reviews. i also updated my status on facebook , hoping someone would give me some other bars. after writing the review i did another search on yelp for dive bars and a couple others. i also got a response from bethanie about a pub that was not too far from jim's house. so we went on a drive by of potential hang outs.
johhny's saloon came up first. there were some people hanging outside. to me the people looked like they wanted a fight. jim thought they looked like the skinheads that got displaced from the pier. the shooter selection sounds good on their website but we'll go when the sun is still up. after that we went on our journey for
kit's place since they are both on beach blvd. i didn't realize it until last night but there are quite a few of those bikini/lingerie bars on beach. i wonder if the area is zoned for that?
back to kit's place. it was behind a chevron so i didn't see it at first. the outside looked ok so we went to see how it was. the bartender was a card. i felt sorry for her b/c she body looked like she had just been on a ho, ho , ho edition of cops. first good thing was that the music was at a respectable level. my granny ears rejoice! we sit at the bar and the bartender begins to tell us that she's been working 16 days straight at 3 different bars with one in fullerton.this isn't her regular bar she's just working there tonight. then she asked us for our drink order. i didn't want another apple martini so i asked what is she good at making. she says she's the shot queen. i ask for a oatmeal cookie. she doesn't know that shot. i end up getting a apple martini. i'm a little scared but i figure if we don't make eye contact she'll leave us alone. i guess since jim and i look friendly, she begins to hang out with us. my drink was free b/c "it took a while" and jim ended up getting like 4 oz of jack with a splash of coke. it didn't take that long to get our drinks to us but i think since she was running on fumes, time was all over the place. i'm not even 2 sips into my drink when she wants to take shots of jagger. lady, you are the only bartender i don't think you should be taking shots. well those shots took a while to come because she started to tell us more about her life and she was getting in a yelling match with one of the patrons. she told us that there were already three fights that night but they were all couples. i don't know how that makes it better but yeah. one of the patrons began to tell us that huntington beach and costa mesa use to have a lot of prostitution and that's how it became sin city. i'm not a native huntington beacher but i've never heard anyone call it sin city. well after that little convo it was jagger time. i was really hoping she was going to forget but she didn't . she paid for them by taking someone's money. i don't think the money was for her tip. so she comes with 3 glasses, i try to get the smallest one and she hands me the biggest. i'm still not finish with my apple martini. that jagger hit me hard. i just wanted to finish my drink and leave so i could sober up to drive back home. i also wanted someone else to come so she could talk to them and we could quietly leave. well thank heavens that some guys came. she wanted to take her smoking break and the guys went with her. so long paragraph short. jim and i were able to leave.
we were both tired and hungry. we ate some chips and dip and took a nap. we got back at his house before midnight so i figured i would take an hour nap and go home. i was knocked out. when i finally woke up it was 3:15! i got up and raced to get home before my mother woke up for the day and fussed at me for being out all night. i did not succeed. she called me at 3:45 and asked where i was. the good thing is that i was halfway home.
that was my halloween. i'm not sure if kit's place will be our oc bar b/c we still have to try bethanie's suggestion.
