I'd say I really need to update this thing more often (which I suppose I just did :P) but I've already said that how many times now, and this place gets neglected time and again? Anyway, this is a bit of a significant thing happening in my life that I felt an update was definitely needed! So as some of you may know I needed to find an apartment. Several reasons for this need. One, I'm freaking 28 and still living with my parents! Not that there's really anything wrong with that but really it's about time I got my own place. Then there's the fact that my brother's going to become a father in November, so my parents want to move out there to help with that, which means selling the house. Since I can't afford to buy the place outright or move with them (I don't have the money to go unemployed for who knows how long it would take to find a job where they're moving and given I drive 12 hours a day at my job I'd really rather not make a 2 hour drive each way just to do that) I'm left with finding an apartment. So since where I live now I kind of don't really care for I decided I'm moving to Appleton! It's got more to do, and is close enough to my current job that I can still commute to Green Bay while living in Appleton, or the other way around (which it turns out I'm moving before I find a new job.)
I did have a place lined up with a friend; just was waiting on getting approval with the landlord, but unfortunately due to having my deadline get bumped a bit I needed to look elsewhere in case they couldn't get back to me in time. I did manage to find a place though! Turns out the trick to getting a place from Craigslist is to get in contact with the advertiser pretty much the day it gets posted, get it viewed as soon as possible, and apply right away. Wound up checking out a nice little 2 bedroom apartment on Appleton's northeast side (actually, several. One on the NE side, and one on the NW side but I like the NE one better, and they actually approved my application pretty much right away.) 2 bedrooms (with one of them having a door leading outside), plenty of closet space, free water, a garage (huge plus for me. I don't like the idea of exposing my car to the elements, especially considering Appleton can get some pretty nasty storms with hail!), A/C and heater meant for a house instead of an apartment (which should mean quicker heating/cooling, saving me money! Although it probably takes more juice to run but hey, 20 minutes of cooling at 2kw/hr (probably exaggerating there!) is cheaper than an hour at 1kw/hr), & private locked storage with washer/dryer hookups in the basement (definitely a plus when my parents move, as they're giving me their washer & dryer. Saves me money at a laundromat!)
Unfortunately the move is going to cost me quite a bit, but should be worth it. $1,000 just in the first month's rent alone (also includes security deposit), about $180 in TV stand and computer desk, probably another $100 in pots and pans and other kitchen cooking items, and who knows how much to get my electricity and cable going. Not to mention the cost of the U-Haul. Maybe gas too, but I think everything's electric. Luckily I have quite a bit of essentials I'm going to be taking with me so I won't be lacking in a few things. Chair (maybe couch), bed, microwave, tableware, glass table for food/tabletop gaming, glassware, book cases.. I'd have a desk and TV stand except I don't like the clunky thing I'm using now for my TV, and my current desk wasn't meant to be moved (and is already starting to fall apart after moving it once. I doubt it would actually survive another without collapsing). Since my parents are downsizing I'm pretty much free to grab whatever they don't need/want! Since they're going to be buying brand new for just about everything when they move, this means just about everything in the house is up for grabs! :D Including a desktop computer! This will make... 3 desktop units I have now? And all 3 are definitely going to be used, even if I'm just going to be screwing around with 2 of them. I've a few pet projects I want to play with, and do need at least 3-4 machines to work them! Going to need a fifth, but it doesn't need to be powerful. In fact, it likely can't be powerful since I'm running MS-DOS 5.0 on it (with Windows 3.1x) But anyway, yay apartment! Now I need to cracking on the packing and be ready to move when the place is ready for me to move in!
For now I'll likely just enjoy having a place of my own! Eventually I may have someone move in but for now I want the freedom only living alone can bring.
Ugh, just realized how much I have to do now. Pack for sure, but need to submit a change of address to so many different companies, like the DMV, my job, several banks, and a few other places that send things to me. Also need to find another UPS store local to where I'm moving so I can get packages without missing any because of sleep or work
