Biking to work this morning, this guy pulls up next to me at the corner of Sierra Madre and San Pasqual. I end up chatting to him all the rest of the way to Caltech. He's a retired engineer, 35 years at various parts of Edison (which apparently gives him time to bike for fun on random Monday mornings). Talked with him a bit about how nobody nowadays would have any real aspirations of staying at a company that long (due to expectations on both sides). There is less (though not 0) overhead on moving, and companies seem to have taken it in stride, hiring people for ever more specific skillsets, rather than seeking and retaining the all around awesomeest people they can.
Anyway, it was neat to talk with him. Pasadena has a unsurprisingly high density of random science and engineer types.
