I came home after Rosh Hashanah services tonight, and I went and took a look at metafilter, and the top thing stopped me. 'RIP Peter Geiberger, 1979-2006'. I went to high school with this guy. About three years ago, I did a quick google search on his name, for no real reason, and it came up with the LA cacophony site about his supposed death in 2000. I was pretty shaken, even if I hadn't seen him since I was 15 ( he transferred out of my school his junior year, I believe). I have one photo of him; from Halloween in 1994 or so. I don't really remember how or why, but he lived near me, and we ended up going trick or treating together. He's wearing a bowler hat, and I've got pigtails and a stupid smile (the best costume I could think of when I was a freshman).

So now I get to think through it again. Bah.

And, in that vein,

you gave us light, RIP

I was glad I got to speak to Kevin's parents and give my condolences, it weighed on me heavily last year when I couldn't be there for the memorial ceremony. Being able to go out to the playa and be there in that time was , well, not good, but good that I could. The last morning I was there, in the early hours of the dawn, I was sitting and heard Mario ask Lifto what the ashes had looked like. Lifto thought for a second, with a distant look on his face, then turned, and said "you know the difference between a communion wafer, and a cracker?" "sure," said Mario. "Well, keeping that in mind, it looked like what you get after you have a barbeque."

I doubt I could have put it as well.

Shanah tovah, may this year be better than the last.
