opening statement: other than some bruising on my arm, I'm fine , best as I can tell.

I was helping people move today, and was carrying some of their things back to a storage location, when I had an accident on the freeway.

A car to the front and right of me got somehow entangled with a mattress, and began spinning to his left. The car in front of me saw him do this, and managed to swerve out of the way. I saw him, had less time than that, and hit the brakes pretty hard, but in not quite enough time to stop. His front left corner impacted with the middle of the grill in the front of my car. I don't recall the moment of collision, but a few moments later my face was in the air bag (yay airbag) and I smelled smoke. Erin and I rapidly got out of the car, and surveyed the situation.

I had my camera, and started taking photos after, well, sitting sort of shocked for a moment. Erin called 911. We got to be the middle of the sea that parted around us. The Fire Dept. came with remarkable alacrity. They determined I wasn't , you know, horribly injured (nor was anyone else) and called off the ambulance that had also been summoned. They also gave me a trauma bear. Nice stuffed animal; seems remarkably intelligent that the firefighters would have a stash of something like that in their truck.

The CHP showed up shortly thereafter. They stopped traffic for us, which was kind of fascinating to see from the other side. the other car had had a friend show up, and they drove that car off the freeway. My car at the moment didn't seem to want to go into gear, so it was cow-catched off the freeway by the CHP guys. We basically then sat at the side of the road, handed over a pile of ID to the CHP guy. He took both our stories, etc etc. the tow truck guy then came, determined my car would in fact go, but still gave it a tow home. In the meanwhile, my dad had also come, which was also nice. So, now I get to call insurance and deal with all the crap. Joy.

*sniff* my poor car.

Got to say, I'm glad it was an Altima that was involved, not an SUV. I'm glad my brakes are new within the year, and my tires within 10k miles. I'm glad I believe in following distances.
