Yar.
Term ended a week or so ago, I guess. Which means TAing is done for the moment (more freshman chem in winter quarter. whee.)
I didn't quite finish the class I was taking, but after a short discussion, I'm getting an A anyway, and get to finish it next quarter.
Most people in years past taking the class took more than a quarter, but the registrar finally stopped Harry from
giving out incompletes in the class. Given that really like only 1-2 people a year take the thing, I'm not sure why, but we'll go with it.
I gave a seminar a week ago Friday, December 9th. It was pretty nerve-wracking to prepare, and then it actually ended up
going pretty well, with a fair amount of last minute help from several friends. But then, somehow, afterwards, I was
more stressed than before , which I hadn't been expecting. I went to Joshua Tree for a few days, which totally
rocked, but then came back and my head sucked. But it seems to have mellowed out.
Anyway, I think it's time to start a semi-occasional reread of The Sandman.
To all you Neil fans - how long have you been fans? I find myself wondering where
other people got started. I was biking around one day when I was 13, and went to this little
local comic book shop, that was located in the rear end of, of all things, a rental car place,
but it was a great place to go because it was air-conditioned and the guy who
worked there was nice, although I didn't really read comics, so I think it was
just a place to stop by on a hot summer day.
anyway, he suggested to me an issue of the sandman, I don't remember which one, I think one in the 30s or something,
whatever was out around 1993. I have to admit, a single issue didn't make much sense, but I kept buying more of them.
I took me until I was 21 or so to get all of them, all through jr high and high school and on into my senior
year at MIT. For those last few issues, well after the series run was over, I couldn't even find
them in shops - I had to use judicious ebay-ing. And there certainly wasn't a complete set of graphic
novels when I started, and even had there been, I certainly couldn't have afforded them. And even if I could have,
well, I kind of like the issues. The ads, even, somehow, and the letters page,
and all the beautiful covers.
But regardless, it wasn't until I was 21 that I could sit down and read the whole series
from start to end, and I have to admit, even having read it piecemeal so many times,
the whole story pretty much hornswoggled me.
So, good morning.
