So, since my internship starts tomorrow (and I'll be out of town with limited internet access for 3 days bc of training), this past week was supposed to be my last opportunity to catch up on quality TV.

Here's what was supposed to happen: I decided to FINALLY get around to watching Buffy, which I had never seen (yes, I know, much loss of fangirl ( Read more... )

Holy crap, 26 hours of BOF! XD YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS BOF♥♥♥ You don't need to have any asian blood to enjoy asian dramas. I can share some of mine, if you want. XDBOF is only the Korean version. It started out as a Japanese manga, Hana Yori Dango. Then Taiwan made it into a drama, Meteor Garden, back in the early 2000s. It was such a humongously huge super massive hit, the F4 officially became a boyband and even had a tour. There seems to be a recurring theme of boybands in the dramas. Japanese Junpyo (Tsukasa) is a boybander irl. So is irl JiHoo (Kim Hyun Joong). Oh god, his acting was so horrible. Oh, and irl Prince Song (Kim Joon), too, but his group is a flop. They sang one theme song for BOF and it was a hit, but they kind of just faded into oblivion after that. irl Jihoo's boyband, SS501, is now disbanded-ish ( ... )

It has been a constant in my life, BOF/HYD is almost like a childhood friend lolol. I remember my older relatives obsessing over it, then having the other versions to love years later. XD

YOU SHOULD!!! Or you could try out the other versions... (but BOF is the best version, imo, because they've perfected which plotlines to adapt from the manga and which ones to make into their own, considering the cultural differences between the original material, etc...)

Which characters and ships did you like best? :D

Oh wow!!!!

I'm actually gonna need to think about that XD

I really loved the soulmate-vs-in-love triangle. I happily multiship Jan Di with both of them, but I have a really soft spot for Ji Hoo soooo ... XD

Favorite character? Too many to mention!!!! Besides Ji Hoo (I think he was pretty much in every scene that made me cry, IDEK lol), probably the secretary Jung Sang Ruk was my favorite. But a list of characters I dislike would probably be a lot shorter, as I think I liked most of them!

Favorite scenes include the toilet scene (lololol), and the compare/contrast of the shoe-shopping scenes (Jun Pyo pleases her by observation, but Ji Hoo is just unerringly on the same wavelength and just ~knows~) XD

How bout you? =D

I multiship her with both, or all, too. XD I don't dislike/not ship any ships in this fandom. XD Although the violence is toned down in this version, Junpyo is one of my least faves and only like him when he stops being a bully. Jihoo has always been my fave character, in all versions. ー( ´ ▽ ` )ノ

Fave ship is SoEulmates (Yijung/GaEul)♥♥♥♥ It's probably the only ship I like better or could rival in my love for Doctor/Rose. XD It happened pretty late in the manga, was non-existent in Meteor Garden, was kind of an afterthought in the HYD drama, but was a legitimate sideship here. It was so popular, it even continued in cellphone commercials for the two actors.

Scenes... same, with Jihoo, including the crying lololol. Plus SoEul scenes like when she was being a tourist and tagging Yijung along to take pics, and then pranked him to get even for making her think something bad happened to Jandi so that he could trick her into coming along on their trip.

Waah, this makes me want to rewatch it again. (*⌒ヮ⌒*)

What kinds of violence were in the other versions? Granted I marathoned this so it's a bit of a blur now (hence need for rewatch hahah), but it seemed to me that whenever violence was done in Junpyo's name (red card, etc), that it was "other people" going too far above and beyond what Junpyo had intended. (Like, when those guys try to assault Jandi outside the bathroom and Jihoo comes by to ask her about pancakes and saves her).

SoEulmates

AWWWWWWWWWW. Very clever name for that ship!!!

The kind that puts people into hospitals when he's in a bad mood and his family has to pay them off so he doesn't go to jail. D: Yeah, the other versions doesn't ask about pancakes, but he saves her too. XD

Ugh ... definitely sounds quite a bit darker then @.@

The Korean version almost made it seem to me that he didn't know his own social strength in terms of how seriously people would take him.

I love the pancakes!!! That's such a random addition, but it was SO CUTE!!

(Head canon says that by the end of their med school training, they are closer BFFs then he ever was with F4, or than she ever was with Ga Eul. Heck, that's probably true by episode 10, but even so ... XD)

I JUST REALIZED, I NEED ICONS!!!!!!!!

S'why I can't like him as much as I do the others, even though he's pretty likable by the end.

Junpyo is almost like a cuddly bunny compared to Dao Ming Xi (Taiwanese) and Tsukasa (Japanese). He's the tallest, and cutest (imo), but I wouldn't bet on him against the other two. XD

Maybe they could open up a practice together! They could even use Jihoo's grandpa's old building? ;__;

icons? :D

YAY ICONS!!! =D

Jihoo's grandpa D=

... was there that big of a (4 year!!) time jump in the other versions? Just wondering if those years were ever filled in.

... I bet Jan Di was all he had then =( And I bet she didn't leave his side for like, EVER.

... except to use the toilet XD

At the end of the manga, he asks for 4 years and goes to New York. There's a one year timeskip, and they get an invitation to Seo Hyun's wedding in France ( ... )

Awesome, thanks for the description!! I SO WANT TO SEE/READ OTHER VERSIONS OF THIS NOW!!

There's a funny incident when Junpyo video chats with Jandi, involving Jihoo.

J/w, at least in the Korean version, what would be the equivalent honorifics? Like when calling Junpyo 'Goo Junpyo,' would the Goo be part of an honorific?

(Remember how long he held on to Seo Hyun?)

Ngl, I'm still trying to figure out the exact nature of their relationship. The Netflix subtitles aren't the same as the DVD ones as far as I can tell, and I think some of the nuance was lost XD

LMFAO yes and accidentally on purpose walks in on her. The toilet walk-in happens in all versions and is never not funny. XXXXXXXD

I LOVE THAT THEY KEPT THIS!!!

Goo is Junpyo's last name. XD iirc, Jandi calls Jihoo, Yijung and WooBin -sunbae. It's used for seniors/upperclassmen. Jandi has never called Junpyo, in any installment, with any honorifics.

Remember that scene where Jandi's trying to apologize to Junpyo in the F4 clubhouse (with the apple/apology pun, and Jihoo ate it lol!) and he asks for 3 wishes, but she tricked him out of two and his last was to call him oppa. Oppa is for young females > older male = "big brother", but it's used by girlfriends to address their boyfriends, too. It's also really cutesy, that's why Jandi couldn't say it. XD

Jihoo was in love with her ever since they were kids, but she was older and thought of him as a younger brother. They finally had a romantic relationship when he chased after her abroad, but their goals in life just don't coincide, so he let go. Or idk, open to other interpretations, I guess, but that's just my take on it. XD

Ahhhh ok thanks for explaining! All that was kind of lost on me haha XD I was wondering if the use of the last name indicates any kind of formality, the way that calling someone "Miss Jones" is more formal in English than just calling them by their first name.
