I think Ian Mackaye is a bastard. He's so self-righteous, it's ridiculous. You've heard about the "icecream eating mother-fucker" incident, haven't you? It's just an example of how full of himself he is. I've met him a few times at The Black Cat in D.C and he was nice, but, I think some of the things he says and does are ridiculous.
I do like Fugazi's music, though.

i'm unaware of "the ice cream incident", i don't know too much about him, i know all of the bands he's been in, but i guess he was pretty hardlined back in the day and has become a lot more understanding since then, that's really all that i (think) i know. please tell me more about him though, i'd love to know more, good or bad.

Hah, the icecream eating mother-fucker incident. Ok, awhile back this guy was doing a documentary on the history of straight-edge, and Ian Mckaye..So, he goes to a show and is taping it. Some kids start throwing eachother around trying to start a pit, and Mckaye stops the set and starts rambling about how they shouldn't do that shit at his shows (which I think is ridiculous, the kids were showing their support..and that they enjoyed the music) in the midst of bitching at the kids, he points at one of them and says "Hey, I saw you at a Good Humor truck earlier. You were getting an icecream cone..just like a little kid! Your an icecream eating mother-fucker!"

How much more self righteous can you get? I can listen to their music..and eat all of the icecream I want, and scarf down as much soda and meat my stomache can hold, and it won't change the fact that I like their music.

hahaha. ummm, well at the conference he was talking about the times when he'd tell the crowd not to hurt each other. he was saying that one of the most important things to him was the safety of the crowd that was there to see him, because he felt responsible for their health. which is why they would play a large venue with a budweiser sign in it, if it was a safe place, people weren't going to get beaten up, the floor wasn't going to cave in on them, etc, rather than an abandoned warehouse that would be so much more "diy". and that's why he'd tell the crowd to stop. now i'm not saying that's right or wrong, i just think his reasoning's a little bit understandable. i definitely do see your point, though.

Yeah, when I go to shows I like to dance. It's good they have concern for their fans, but If their fans are willing to take the risk..than why not? Some of the things he says are brillant, other times they get a little out there. When he first said "straight-edge" he said "NO SEX, EVEN IF IT'S NOT CASUAL." After a bit, he decided against that and just said "no casual sex." Hah, nice right? ..Maybe one day he'll give in on the ice cream thing, too. Well, I'm going to add you to my friends list, later.

well, i dance from time to time, but it seems like its not even a thing people do for fun anymore. its like the point is to a. look really cool, or b. hurt people. i mean, i've been all over the country the past 6 months, and it just seems like everywhere, kids are just standing around, bored as shit until the breakdown drops, then bam everyone dances, then as soon as its over, everyone comes to a complete stop. i think he said all this stuff when it was REALLY hard to say it, and no one had before, so i mean, i don't think anyone would know the exact right way to approach something like that in order to get your point across perfectly. but yeah, i added you too.

I totally agree with that point, 200%. I've been hurt so many times by dumbasses throwing fists during sets. Have a good time, dance. I wouldn't enjoy shows nearly as much If I wasted my time worrying about what people were thinking. I think people that try to hurt other people with their dancing are idiots that are scared of how they look really dancing, so they go for the hardcore, badass look. Blech. I got my ribs broken at Royal Lee at a show, and I got punched in the stomache during a Goons set at BlackCat. ..It seems the same deucebags always come to the Goons shows and hit people. Good point.

what about circle pits? killtoimpress January 29 2004, 07:01:25 UTC
man, that sounds pretty shitty. last saturday i went to see requiem (ex-catharsis) and this bike is a pipe bomb and everyone was circle pitting for requiem and it just seemed like such a better use of energy. same feeling you get as when you dance only, completely different consequences. everyone's happy and united! i think there's an upcoming surge in putting the fun/love/positive side/unity back in hardcore, or maybe i just was unaware of it while in new mexico/texas, but i think the future's looking bright, quite frankly.
