The last job had been a disaster - not because he had taken Hunter along, the kid held his own in tight corners when he had to - no, it was because Jase hadn't been prepared to be part of a tag-team. And, as such his temper wasn't his best.
But this weekend away was going as planned, whatever he had to do. Or he would put it off and forget. Or discard the idea altogether.
The dynamics of their relationship had always been crazy, he knew that - but there had been signs, small indications in Hunter, the way he spoke, reacted at times... god, he hoped he hadn't read this wrong.
"It's just around this last bend," he murmured, turning the wheel swiftly as he spoke.. the trees masking their view with their hanging boughs and leaves. The summer cabin stood near a lake. Not quite mountain range, as there was a little town just behind them. But it was private and remote. Just perfect.
