LOG: John/Jack O'Neill

Jul 03, 2007 17:38

John was sitting outside on the front stoop of the hotel, looking out at the sun. He normally wasn't much for reflection, but for some reason, he couldn't help it tonight. People seemed to be settling in to the hotel. He wasn't sure if it bothered him or not ( Read more... )

John nodded, still a little bit lost in thought, but what Jack was saying made sense. "She seem okay when you met her?" Ellen wasn't the type to panic, but still, he knew she could get afraid when it was right to get afraid.

"I'd say she seemed very okay. Surprisingly calm. But then, she said she'd dealt with strange happenings before." Jack leaned comfortably against the railing that ran around the hotel's porch. "She strikes me as a woman who can take care of herself."

He had to stifle an urge to laugh. "She can definitely take care of herself. Just ... this is pretty Goddamn weird, even for people who've seen what we have." And despite the fact she still probably didn't want much to do with him, he did worry about her. He'd have to find her and talk to her.

"It's weird, I'll give you that." No weirder, or scarier, than some of the situations Jack had encountered over the years but stranger than anything regular folks would've encountered. And without knowing what it was John and Ellen had seen, he tended to consider them 'regular' folks.

"Anyhoo, this Captain Harkness I mentioned--he seems to be working on organizing our little resistance movement. Probably be a good idea for you to talk to him, if you haven't already."

He didn't like the assumption that this guy seemed to have - that John was some average joe - but he couldn't blame Jack for having it. "There's a Captain here?" John shook his head. Interesting that the hotel seemed to be grabbing military personnel left and right. He hazarded a half-joke. "No disrespect intended to the rank, but I stopped kissing ass after 'Nam."

"I've never been a big fan of ass-kissing, from either end. But I'm not real crazy about insubordination either." Jack actually said that with a straight face, as if he hadn't been guilty of insubordination himself. And more than once.

"The thing is, this place isn't part of my Earth, and it's not part of Captain Harkness' Earth, so the whole chain of command thing doesn't apply here anyway."

John muttered something uncomplimentary about insubordination under his breath. He'd followed his share of orders, but things were different nowadays. He'd been the one giving the orders for too long.

Still, Jack hadn't done anything to piss him off, and John explained a little, trying to sound less irritated. "Just been used to doing things for myself and my boys for the last long time. Not crazy about someone else trying to horn in. Haven't heard anything bad about the guy or anything, though." And if this Captain Harkness guy wasn't even from earth, well. What the hell to expect?

Jack nodded slowly as John explained himself. He understood wanting to be in control but if John was the type to dig his heels in just for the sake of being stubborn...well, it would be his funeral. Jack wasn't going to lose any sleep over it.

"I don't get the impression that Harkness is looking to set himself up as the boss. He's just looking to organize our efforts a little." Jack gave a crooked smile as he remembered Ellen saying she needed to see things for herself. He'd been the same way himself, but it was a little foolish for all of them to keep going their separate ways, repeating the same failed experiments over and over.

"It's entirely up to you whether you want to join in or not. But I would suggest you at least talk to the guy before you make up your mind."

Jack just hoped Harkness wouldn't try to flirt with John. He wasn't sure that would go over all that well.

"You're right." John nodded - contrary to some people's belief, admitting that didn't cause him any pain. "I'll try and find the guy. Talk to him." He matched Jack's crooked smile, at least for a second. "Twenty years' habits die hard."

"I hear ya. Of course, I figure those habits are why I've survived all these years but...." Jack gave a careless wave at the decayed facade of their new home. "Sometimes one must adapt to...unique circumstances."

Jack chuckled as he pushed away from the railing. "And speaking of old habits, I can't seem to break my habit of making a regular perimeter check. You're welcome to join me, but I suppose with a pretty girlfriend like Alice, you've got better things to do."

Sorry, I suck. Things are calmer now.

John couldn't help but smile, though he did shake his head at Jack's offer. "I actually think I might go track Ellen down." He wouldn't be too at ease until he found out where she was and how she was doing.

He had to ask, though, given the question had been in his mind earlier. "By the way ... you said you and Alice talked about fishing?" Of all things?

no prob

"I'm sure she'll be glad to see you."

Jack chuckled as he remembered the conversation with Alice. "Yeah, we were making small talk in the bar. Fishing is kind of a passion of mine so I asked her if she'd ever tried it. Said she had but all she did was sit in the boat and drink beer." He chuckled again and shook his head. He liked Alice. Not in the sense that he liked her, but she had a spark to her. She was a smart girl.

"I told her that was pretty much the whole point of fishing. I even made her promise to go with me next time. You know--if and when I ever get the chance."
