Bella and Emily wait for the things to come. The air is tense and Bella takes a deep breath, hears a little growl. She averts her eyes from the clearing and looks at a grey wolf. Its brown eyes are burning into her, and it’s not a warm brown, rather a cold one that reminds her of the earth facing a wild thunderstorm.
“Don’t worry, it’ll be okay,” Emily reassures and takes Bella’s hand. “They will protect us.”
Bella’s heart skips a beat when several figures are approaching them. They do look like humans, and not humane at all at the same time. Their skin is too white, it looks cold and hard. Their whole appearance is simply wrong, way too perfect, way too beautiful.

Leah had told her about this, had told Bella of the danger in this beauty. “They want to lure you with their attractiveness, want to gain your trust by smiling at you. But don’t be fooled, Bella,” she had warned the night before when they rested in Leah’s bed and Bella had snuggled up to her.
“Don’t worry, I won’t. And these creatures are responsible for your … transformation?”
Leah sighed and took a deep breath, trying to contain her anger. “Yes. We have to protect La Push. It’s in our blood.”
Bella pressed her lips together. “Will you be okay?”
Leah smiled a little and pulled Bella in. “Of course, don’t worry …”

But right now Bella does worry - a lot - and fights the urge to walk up to her grey wolf and lay her arms around it protectively when the Cold Ones are getting closer and closer.
“We don’t want any trouble,” the eldest calls out.
“Neither do we.” Sam is the only one of the Quileute in his human form.
“We’re not feeding on people, so there’s no need for any fighting,” another one speaks up, a young boy with bronze-colored hair. Bella frowns at him as their eyes meet, and when he gives her a flashing smile, Leah growls louder and trots to the human girl’s side.
“Just stay away from us. La Push is no place for you. And should there be any sign of you breaking the rules, we will hunt you down,” Sam threatens, but the smiles of the Cold Ones don’t fade.
“That won’t be necessary,” the first one answers, nods his head in a respectful manner and turns around to leave, the others following.
Bella releases the breath she wasn’t aware of holding and smiles when Sam returns to Emily’s side and feels how Leah nudges her gently.
“Thank goodness they are gone,” she says and pets the wolf’s head.
“We will be alright,” Sam smiles at Bella.
“Will you two come over to dinner later?” Emily asks and mirrors Sam’s smile.
“Sure, I’ll just call Charlie.”
She hears Leah doing a huffing noise and snickers. “Be good, I’m coming,” she says to her and climbs onto the wolf’s back. “See ya later,” she calls out and waves before holding on tight when Leah starts running off.

“Way later,” Bella grins and leans forward to speak directly into Leah’s ear. “You know what I like about this transformation-thingy? You’re turning back with no clothes on,” she says with a smug tone in her voice, making Leah run a little faster with the forecast of their afternoon-actions.
