Sometimes Dawn can hear Amanda cry. Not very often, not very loud; always late at night when the girl thinks everybody else is asleep. Dawn doesn’t let her know that she knows. She thinks about the fate Amanda has to face. A fate she watched for a long time, a fate she knows all about. Always a watcher, taking no part.
But she was always there when Buffy needed her, and if it was just to hold her when life had been tough again. Her older sister would never admit it, but Dawn likes to think that it is helpful.
Her thoughts are interrupted by another soft sigh. Amanda. Right.
Dawn turns around, faces the other girl. Since they are friends, she agreed to let Amanda sleep in her own bed while some other girls are in sleeping bags on the floor.
Amanda gasps a little when she sees Dawn looking at her, wipes away her tears hastily.
Dawn shakes her head, just a little, and reaches out to take Amanda’s hand. She presses her fingers a little, lets her know she’s there. And Amanda smiles, as more tears fill her eyes. But she returns the pressure on her fingers and knows she’s not alone.
