„Lance, please don’t go!“ Kitty’s pleading voice made him stop but not turn around. He clenched his fist and gritted his teeth.
“No, Kitty, it’s enough. I can’t stand these idiots anymore,” he said with a voice trembling with anger.
Kitty came up to him and looked into his eyes. “But-“
“No but. You always preached about how good the X-men are, how tolerant … but have you seen the way they look at me? Like I’m nothing more than scum.”
“Lance, that is not true.” She shook her head and laid a hand on his fist.
“You know it’s true,” he said, his voice softer now. “You’re the only one to accept me for who I am. But sorry, that’s not enough. I don’t want to spend another day feeling like I don’t belong. At the brotherhood we don’t have the luxury you have, but at least I know where I stand.”
He lifted his hand to touch her cheek, smiling a little. “Thanks for trying though. It really means a lot to me.”
Kitty sniffled a little but returned the smile. “You’re welcome.”
“See you at school?”
“Wouldn’t miss it.”
With that he walked on, leaving her behind.
