Dad Called
It raining a soft sweet rain. The petals from the blooming trees have fallen. The honeysuckles have started to come out. That with the rain gives the air that special bittersweet smell that always makes me glad I found my way home.
I got home from work an hour late this morning and went almost directly to bed. PNO is tonight and I wanted to make sure I got a good amount of sleep before going to PNO and then work. I’m supposed to be the supervisor tonight.
I got to sleep for about two hours when I was woken by a phone call from my aunt. She told me she had found a strange message on her answering machine from my father. He left her a phone number (the same phone number I already had) and said it was very important that I call him. She said his voice sounded shaky. I haven’t spoken to my father in over three years. I’ve never changed my number even after moving to Baltimore. Why did he call her of all people? Why does he want to talk now?
I have a few of theories. 1. he’s dieing and wants to make amends. 2. he needs bail money. 3. he won the lottery and wants to share with his long lost daughter. (heh, yeah right.) 3. My Aunt (his fathers’ sister) in Maine died. Whatever it is, I have trouble believing this is going to be good news.
I chatted with my aunt for a while, then called my mom in Turkey. She advised that I go ahead and call. Then I went out to my car and lit a cigarette and called my friend Heyoka, she asked if I actually wanted to talk to him or just say “Fuck it.” (I love her.) I told her whether I wanted to call or not, my curiosity would get the better of me and I would call.
Then I called the number.
A lady answered. I explained why I was calling and she said he wasn’t home. He had “gone out to lunch with one of his buddies.” (OK, he’s not in jail.) She took my number and said she’d tell him that I called as soon as he got home.
Now I’m waiting. I’m listening to the rain, and waiting. I really should try to sleep. Work tonight will really suck on only two hours sleep. But how am I supposed to sleep after this?
